Specialist Kicking Skills Coach

Post: # 1030261Post Junction Oval »

Looking at last year's clangers and suggested player positional movement, there seems to be a need for a specialist Kicking Skills Coach, even if only for the pre-season. Alternatively, a lot more practice built into training programmes.

It's called "foot"ball. Any thoughts?

Paul Hudson. Is our Development Coach. Was a beautiful kick when he played. Well qualified for the job. Having said that, by the time guys get to AFL they are pretty well set and any improvement will be minimal to moderate. Stewie Leowe being the exception, coached by Peter Hudson, Paul Hudson's dad !!

NEW scarf signature (hopefully with correct spelling) will be here as soon as it arrives !!

Welcome to SS, and interesting first post and subject.

Reading the info on the newest recruits, they all seemed to mention they had good foot skills.

Fix Gilberts disposal by foot, and he'd have the potential to be elite IMO.

    Looks like a generational thing.

Paul's legendary father Peter was our kicking coach in the early 90s under Kenny.
He devised some kicking scheme for players to visualise their kicking involving their foot, a piece of string and their scrotum. :?
    I can't remember the details.
But it turned Stewie Loewe from a hack kick to a very effective one.

Well I would think kicking is our biggest problem, so any improvement in that area is much needed.

Our current kicking skills don't remind me of the scrotum, but something not that far behind that area.

Yep just about impossible to make a poor kick good especially in general play with the pace of the game these days.

i dont read to much into the new players bios. they are all sales pitches. because speed and kicking skills are the high attributes in the afl right now i noticed nearly every drafted player was quoted as "lightning quick and great footskills".

in reality hardly a single player in the afl can break 11 secs for a 100m. from the videos ive seen - cripps looks like he can run pretty nicely.

so ill believe it when i see it.

IAgree, it's rare that a player who comes to the afl with poor foot skills become great kicks. They may improve to become adeqate kicks but never great kicks
