Inglis considers crossing codes to AFL as Souths deal drags on
Brad Walter
December 18, 2010

GREG INGLIS is set to meet with AFL clubs St Kilda and Essendon as his frustration grows over the ongoing scrutiny of his deal with South Sydney by the NRL.

He would need a huge pre-season going by the look of him up here for his wedding the other week, but a seriously good athelete, who I believe would make the grade.

Glad we're proactive enough to at least have a look.

How can we possibly pay him?

Yes fairly certain we couldn't finance the defection but it doesn't hurt to talk. Perhaps next year when Roo goes on the vets list?

I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.

Isn't there some loophole about players on the rookie list being outside the salary cap? That's why so many clubs are re-rookieing players?

Possibly but I think it's more that Inglis would be looking at what Hunt and Falau are being paid as a pointer to what he wants.

I think the AFL would figure out a way ro get Inglis into the game, whichever the actual AFL team is.

Please don't mention Riewoldt and veteran status ever again.

Certainly worth us talking to him. I went to manny STorm games and I always thought he would be the NRL player most likely to make a succesful transition to AFL. I woul love that to be as a Saint.

as a storm fan as well saints i think inglis would suit our club
i was sad when he left storm because of his speed but would be not as painful to see him playing elsewhere if he switched codes and saits picked him up

I would love him to come - the reasons are:

1) He wont be on our list next year but can be pre-drafted as someone not registered with AFL for 3 years.
2) As he is not on our list, we can pay him whatever we want next year in whatever role we give him - say "tackling coach".
3) He might be big at the moment but it is only for the game he trains for. He has shown his athletisism and is arguably the best League player in the world. Has 1 year (just like Folau and Hunt) to ready himself for AFL.
4) He will want lots of $, but comparatively league wages are lower than AFL wages, if proposed Players Association slary changes come through we may be able to fit him in.
5) He can kick a League ball very comfortably.

FWIW I think it's ridiculous. It's hard to imagine two more different games than league and AFL.

I don't expect Hunt or Folau to make any sort of an impact. I don't think we need to help Demetriou with another meaningless publicity stunt. We need to focus on developing our youngsters.

At least until 2013.
Riewoldt is not eligible for veteran status until then.

To be eligible as a veteran, a player must have played 10 years at the club - Riewoldt already passes this test as he debuted in 2001.
AND
be 30 years old at the end of the season.
As Riewoldt was born on 17 October 1982 he does turn 30 until 17 October 2012.
Just too late for the 2012 season.

Koschitzke who was born less than a month earlier becomes eligible in 2012.

We don't need him unless Demetriou is successful in his dream to relocate the Saints to Beijing.

I reckon Hunt will for some reason...

However let the other teams go down the experiment path.

I agree with this. However, it's my understanding that the AFL are bankrolling much of Hunt's and Folau's salary under the guise of marketing. If the AFL are prepared to pay half Inglis's wage then I reckon he's worth a shot. I would be loathe to pay him much more than the average 2nd year player. Why on earth would we, even if we had the room in the salary cap, pay big money for a RL player? Betetr off chasing a proven AFL player who can help us win a flag.

I think the idea of recruiting Irishmen, rugby players, athletes, etc is fine in principle but it rarely succeeds and there are only a few examples of it working. I wouldn't pin many hopes on it but if it works all good and well.

If I had trained all my life to get to the elite level of AFL and was earning around 200K then a big name from rugby came along and was pulling 500K so that he could be used as PR to attract NSW punters I'd be a bit uninclined to want to cover his backside in a game which he didn't have the knowhow.

If we get a Bum Sniffer into our team, my first preference would be Billy Slater.....I reckon he could make it.
