I would love him to come - the reasons are:
1) He wont be on our list next year but can be pre-drafted as someone not registered with AFL for 3 years.
2) As he is not on our list, we can pay him whatever we want next year in whatever role we give him - say "tackling coach".
3) He might be big at the moment but it is only for the game he trains for. He has shown his athletisism and is arguably the best League player in the world. Has 1 year (just like Folau and Hunt) to ready himself for AFL.
4) He will want lots of $, but comparatively league wages are lower than AFL wages, if proposed Players Association slary changes come through we may be able to fit him in.
5) He can kick a League ball very comfortably.

FWIW I think it's ridiculous. It's hard to imagine two more different games than league and AFL.
I don't expect Hunt or Folau to make any sort of an impact. I don't think we need to help Demetriou with another meaningless publicity stunt. We need to focus on developing our youngsters.

At least until 2013.Quixote wrote:Please don't mention Riewoldt and veteran status ever again.PJ wrote:Yes fairly certain we couldn't finance the defection but it doesn't hurt to talk. Perhaps next year when Roo goes on the vets list?
Riewoldt is not eligible for veteran status until then.
To be eligible as a veteran, a player must have played 10 years at the club - Riewoldt already passes this test as he debuted in 2001.
AND
be 30 years old at the end of the season.
As Riewoldt was born on 17 October 1982 he does turn 30 until 17 October 2012.
Just too late for the 2012 season.
Koschitzke who was born less than a month earlier becomes eligible in 2012.

We don't need him unless Demetriou is successful in his dream to relocate the Saints to Beijing.meher baba wrote:FWIW I think it's ridiculous. It's hard to imagine two more different games than league and AFL.

Lance or James??
There comes a point in every man's life when he has to say, "Enough is enough." For me, that time is now. I have been dealing with claims that I cheated and had an unfair advantage in <redacted>. Over the past three years, I have been subjected to a <redacted>investigation followed by <redacted> witch hunt. The toll this has taken on my family, and my work for <redacted>and on me leads me to where I am today – finished with this nonsense. (Oops just got a spontaneous errection <unredacted>)

However let the other teams go down the experiment path.

I agree with this. However, it's my understanding that the AFL are bankrolling much of Hunt's and Folau's salary under the guise of marketing. If the AFL are prepared to pay half Inglis's wage then I reckon he's worth a shot. I would be loathe to pay him much more than the average 2nd year player. Why on earth would we, even if we had the room in the salary cap, pay big money for a RL player? Betetr off chasing a proven AFL player who can help us win a flag.meher baba wrote:FWIW I think it's ridiculous. It's hard to imagine two more different games than league and AFL.

I think the idea of recruiting Irishmen, rugby players, athletes, etc is fine in principle but it rarely succeeds and there are only a few examples of it working. I wouldn't pin many hopes on it but if it works all good and well.
If I had trained all my life to get to the elite level of AFL and was earning around 200K then a big name from rugby came along and was pulling 500K so that he could be used as PR to attract NSW punters I'd be a bit uninclined to want to cover his backside in a game which he didn't have the knowhow.

I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.
