I see these as the spots that are pretty much set in stone

B: Gwilt, Dawson, ---
HB: Gram, Blake, Fisher
C: Montagna, Hayes, Dal Santo
HF: Schneider, Riewoldt, Gilbert
F: Milne, ---, ---

Foll: ---, Goddard, Jones
Int: ---, ---, ---
Sub: ---

Competing for 7 spots are

Small defender/half back/tagger (2-3): Dempster, Ray, Baker, Polo, Geary, Raph, Cripps, Simpkin

Attacking midfielder/half forward (2-3): Steven, Peake, Gamble, McQualter, Armitage, Smith, Heyne, Lynch

Ruckman/tall forward (2): Koschitzke, Gardiner, McEvoy, Stanley.

The sub could be any of those types, most likely a strong runner.

Here's my stab at how the regular 2011 team could look

B: Gwilt, Dawson, Geary
HB: Gram, Blake, Fisher
C: Montagna, Hayes, Dal Santo
HF: Schneider, Riewoldt, Gilbert
F: Milne, Koschitzke, Gamble

Foll: Gardiner, Goddard, Jones
Int: Baker, Steven, Ray
Sub: Armitage

Emg: Polo, McEvoy, McQualter

i've never seen nick play, but my impression is that he's a tall runner, rather than a semi-key position player. tall and small is about how they play as much as height. dempster's 192 but i wouldn't call him tall - on the other hand, aaron hamill was 184 and yet he played as a tall.

God help us if Kosi and McQualter are regulars again next season. The mind boggles how they're even still on the list. At least Eddy is gone.

Unlike others, I'm not completely convinced that we can play out an entire season with just one primary ruckman in the 22. However, to use up one of the three interchange positions for a second ruckman is clearly not logical. Some argue that Koschitzke can play as the backup - I don't see that working for 25 or so rounds, especially with Gardiner (whose fitness will continually be questionable) or McEvoy (who showed in GF2 that he still isn't quite up to the job over the course of an entire match) as first ruck.

Really when you look at it, in the past one of the bench positions has been taken up by the second ruck and the other three by runners/utilities. Gardiner and McEvoy (or King) have shared about 50% game time each so nothing really has changed except that the rucks will be on the field solidly for one half before being subbed off around halftime.

May I now ask why you don't believe a ruckman can be the sub?

People can, and will, have their thoughts on the sub, but if anyone here actually claims they know exactly how clubs will use that position, well they only have one hand on the keyboard!

Quite simple really. MG couldnt ruck for a whole half in a million years so he will need help. That will be the likes of Kosi or if Ben can start to play forward more often. A utility type player will be the sub. That means the likes of Blake, Lynch, Heyne type players.

Reality is Bakes and Blake are getting too slow - outside chance of Cripps replacing Blake for speed. Sorry Jonesy but footskills are killing us.

Forward line needs speed and skill. Putting Gardy, Armo and Steven in isn't going to get you any speed. Personally I'd also like to see Winmar get a crack if his fitness is up to it.

I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.

Geez its tight for spots... Especially if a few kids come on.

We have a lot of depth players that could walk right in... Dempster, Geary, Blake, Peake, McQualter

Cant even find a spot for Jones... Who should be there... But too stressful trying to put him in... (Cos I want Steven and Armo to become regulars...)

Very tough season next year for spots... Not sure it translates into an improved team output... Seems we have a lot of average players that have reached their potential....

Interesting team PJ, I do like the idea of accomodating some of the younger players....give some of them first crack and let the more senior guys be the ones applying the pressure for spots.

Does anyone know if Kosi will be ready to go round one, doesn't appear to be back on the track yet?

I thought they were pink, but must be rose coloured. Your optimism about all things Saints is commendable.

ive been thinking long and hard and i reckon i have a very very good side. solid in the back and more unpredictable and mobile up fwd than previous years. i favoured mobility, flexibility and gave the benefit of doubts to youth. if my side has a weakness its the lack of a full time stopper in the middle. i decided jones could be used on the opposition damaging small fwd. might not work (and if not, then dempster comes on as a sub).

gwilt dawson jones
simpkin fisher clarke

milne roo gamble

mcevoy goddard armitage

too old. blake and bakes are almost gone and will be used as back-ups. gards to be used in maybe 10 games next year and kosi will be a 2nd ruckman or nothing. his days in the fwd line are well and truly over. too immobile.

They're not too old until there are youngsters ready to take over. As long as Blake can do his job better than Simpkin, Baker better than say Geary, etc then there is no reason they don't stay in the side.

Fair call though - it is an aged side, I expect (or more so hope) to see the likes mentioned above to have big preseasons and hopefully force their way into the side by finals time.

Well I know im being upbeat about youth - but we have to be positive - if Simpkin, Smith and Stanley dont come on soon we are in deep sh*t. We will just slowly and gradually become easy-beats in a slow drawn-out & painful way.

im quite happy with this line-up. looks half decent all over the park. i introduced youth but made sure that all the newish players played alongside experience so there were no gaps and blokes could have an on-field teacher and not be exposed or roughed up.

Not bad. They should try this in the NAB cup at least once
