Rate Our Drafting (This Year's)

Post: # 1024740Post SaintWodonga »

I think we get a B+ (8/10)
I am happy with 1st 5 picks. I would have rather passed than picked up Polo.

I think Cripps, Crocker, Ledger and Sipos all look good.

They all address needed gaps. Let's hope with Crocker's surgeon like foot and pace, he keeps Jones out.

10 out of 10

gamble.
indentified that we needed another forward even with the emergence of stanley went about getting someone who can actually play the bloody game and not an easy thing to have secured him. however, given that we are such a good team and now have elite facilities you name your price and they agree to it. great get in gamble, the guy can actually play the damn game.
polo.
best of the rest. we needed some backup toughness. more solid than an eddy. about the same age probably 5kg more muscle on him than an eddy. all he has to do is apply himself and there may be a spot there in then rotation for him in a couple of years. in the meantime he's insurance.
always better to go with experience than a kid even if that kid happens to be daniel rich.

picks 1 2 3 dont stand out to me as being anything either immediately or potentially special but look at our list i mean f*** me! i'll keep saying it - in our position it's always better going with readymade players. if you lose anything from two players per year on average through retirement all you need to do is replace them with readymade experience. you can get them from the VFL if you need but what you need are big strong boys for two reasons. A. experience and B. brute power (you can break the bodies of younger less experienced opposition and ensure that their younger less able players do not become of experience)

How does anyone have any idea re the 4 kids?

Ask me in 3 years and I'll tell you then!

A Geelong supporting mate of mine said he would have preferred the Catters to hold onto Gamble. Said the kid could potentially be a gun.

Pretty stoked with how we went in the draft, espeically if you are to compare it to last year.

Although some may disagree with the Polo acquisition, I'm pretty confiedent that RL and co didn't pick any lemons

I think we did very well, not sure that we missed any glaring future guns, please correct me now if I'm wrong, not in 5 years. We addressed areas that we are all saying we're deficient in...I hope this will be a sign that Ross will start giving some kids an opportunity to cement places in our best 22, could be a little shift in Lyon's thinking.

In Ross I trust.

which isn't a bad thing at all. it's exciting in comparison to a foregone conclusion situation of picking lemons.

We recruited for speed, future depth and next season, I think it was mone of our better drafts for the last few years.
True we wontr know for sure regarding the kids we picked up until at least next year at the earliest (VFL form will be important).
Mind you it amazes me how we are unsure of our kids for the futrure, but all the Gold Coast kids are going to be guns, there have been plenty of first round draft picks who didn't amount to much.

in a couple of years they will be walking out in droves......free agency will free up a lot of cap for those clubs who's stars get poached...and gold coast wn't have the many to keep so many super stars happy.....well...that's whay i hope will happen....

Given our picks....expected. Would have loved a slider...think the FF Darling would have been a bargain (or a risk) but is probably ready this year or next. Power fwds are hard to get.

when I read Darling's bio and stats one thing leapt out at me
how much he sounded like Jason Healtey
Hit the packs hard, good over head for size, and could kick a goal
will be watchign for Darling next year

My recollection of The Heater was a good mark on a lead and a fantastic kick.
But
"hitting the packs hard"

Gamble, according to the man that axed him "was not mentally switched on for football."

Ask me again in 2020.

Seriously how could you possible evaluate a draft immediately after it has occurred?

If you look at the video clips on afl.com Cripps looks to be the least talented of all the kids we drafted, but obviously that is not the case. He has been playing A grade WAFL football for a strong club and all the experts rated him so obviously the clips are deceiving.

I would have loved to have picked up Keiran PARKER I think his natural goal kicking instincts are what we need in a medium sized forward who is also good at ground level.

On face value it would appear that North Melb have scooped the pool with their draft selections again this year - but hopefully our lads turn out to be just as successful.

With reagrds to Gamble & Polo IMO Polo will develop and provide off a lot more value than what Gamble will - but both will be reasonable selection. Personally I think Gamble is a bit soft and is not that good at ground level - but will give him a chance.

I have no idea if we drafted well, but taking 4 kids that address our need for midfield speed seems good to me. Look forward to seeing the new boys in the NAB cup.
