Delisted today by the Lions. Incredibly talented junior who had many personal issues that the Lions found difficult to deal with.
Here's the breakdown:
Pros:
Played five of the Lions last six matches in 2010.
Immense talent.
Byron Pickett-clone.
Would be re-united with family in Melbourne (grew up here).
If somebody "can get him right", Andrew Krakouer style, would be a real find.
We're better equipped to handle 'challenging' players
Cons:
May have insurmountable issues.
Has had temper issues.
Needed to leave the club mid-season for personal help.
We're too afraid to take on 'challenging' players.
Before judging one or another, read this.

Has made genuine attempts to turn his life around. Though the Lions have decided to part ways.
Not I'm not necessarily saying he would be the best option for the mature rookie spot - there is no doubt he faces enormous issues - but I have a feeling we haven't seen the last of him at AFL level.
Sort of get the feeling our club will have been so scared off by the Lovett fiasco that we'll become uber-obsessed with recruiting/drafting "good characters", even at the expense of superior talent.

While most people feel we are well placed to turn these players around, it would only be human nature if the Saints were wary of going down that path given the Lovett experience.
I don't see us going down the path this year, either.
I suppose a mature aged rookie spot is a lot different to giving up pick 16 and a gigantic salary. The risk is very, very small by comparison. And I don't think he'll exactly be heading out for bonding sessions with Jason Gram if we're aware of his history.
For example, Jesse Smith retired after we gave him a chance, but was it worth it? Absolutely. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. He was a huge talent but it didn't pay off. Sometimes that happens. On the other hand, sometimes you land Michael Gardiner, Adam Schneider and Stephen Milne, all of whom were considered shaky off-field propositions when we grabbed them from other clubs.
The mature rookie spot is open until very late. I wouldn't mind giving Proud a crack at pre-season training and seeing how badly he wanted that spot. No more.

Yeah, he is overweight. But I still remember his debut game in the NAB Cup. He played very well - serious leg speed.evertonfc wrote:#1GILL wrote:He's lightning!BallBanger wrote:too slow
Carrying a bit too much condition for my liking. Needs to lose at least five - probably 10kg - to get his full-throttle speed back.

Agree - delist Milne, Dawson, Gram, Gardiner, Schneider and Ray immediately.marksnsparks wrote:Seriously, are we so desperate that we have to consider every bit of flotsam and jetsam farted out of the arse of other clubs
And that Gehrig nut-job, well, I can see why West Coast got rid of him!
I think we should even have a cantera policy - no player can play for us unless he was drafted by us first.

Does he get enough footy? More than Proud I know, but he's been in the system a lot longer.BackFromUSA wrote:Chris Johnson would be a better fit for us. Good foot skills off half back and releases Gilbert forward.
Potential mature rookie, for sure.

I had a read of the Carlton boards, and they tended to think he was starting to show signs of improvement and were a little surprised at his delisting. They also indicated he has potential as a midfielder....evertonfc wrote:Does he get enough footy? Great foot skills, but soft was the overriding sentiment.
If Ross was having coffee as rumoured, perhaps Harvey/Ross could see him in the midfield rather than defence?
