I actually heard off a few Saints players who play at Sandy that because of his job he has no interest in playing AFL footy. Could have changed his mind especially if a club approached him.
So all we need is a goal-kicking forward who can compete in the air but not be a liability on the ground? How many of those are there kicking around? If it were really a priority, then surely we would have left Gilbert there in 09 after he'd spent all preseason preparing for the role.
I suspect we'll see Gilbert and Goddard used up front at points next year, but we'll probably also see them elsewhere. After Roo, Kosi, Milne and Schneider it's probably take-your-pick out of Eddy, Mini and Steven again. Most of the other guys range between long-shots and no-chance-at-all. Short of Matty Pavlich or ROK walking in here, I suspect we'll continue to be one of the many teams that doesn't employ a regular third marking target.
On a somewhat related note, watch for several players in this draft to compare themselves to ROK. It seems to happen every year. Each draft has six or seven ROK's, which is odd because there haven't been many like him at AFL level over the past decade. Hammill was similar. Not many others.

He is nominated. Nominations are active for three years from the time of Nomination.
All we need do is pick him and watch the guy go animal on the AFL, Plugger Style!
Although Gilbert doesn't seem a reliable kick for goal, is he any worse than the other forwards? Schneids I would put down as an accurate kick, but come the finals 09 and 10, not so good. Maybe a great kick like Paul Hudson needs to take some of our forwards aside and work on kicking techniques over summer.
The lack of being able to identify and draft medium sized natural goal kickers has been a major void in Johnny Beveridges recruiting over the years. He always seems to go for the meat and potato style footballers and avoids players with any flare (obviously Dal Santo is an exception).
Just think when did the Saints last have a sucessful medium sized goal kicker ?
I thought Natan FYFE was a must get for us last year but we missed out on him !

Same, used to say that...but admittedly I just thought he was good enough to fill a role anywhere in the side.
Very happy with him as a backmen, not only for his creative play and really good kicking skills out of defence, but because he is becoming very good one on one (and perhaps that skill came from playing as a forward)

Well I've never really seen him but I'm very confused.
Is he a Tony Lockett like freak or a bloke not good enough to play AFL? Or is he somewhere in between?
We had a player a few years ago that didn't get many games in AFL, (just 12 games) he could play down back and up forward and could take a decent mark.
In his last game for us (and only his second game for the season) he took 8 marks and had 10 kicks, but he kicked 4 behinds and no goals, some were close and I think a couple of them hit the post.
But that was his last game for us, his name is Matthew Ferguson.
I still think they should have persisted with him

Yeah I liked Ferguson also St Fid but unfortunately his body let him down.
I think the game you are referring to was in fact his 2nd last game. It was at Etihad and included at least one screamer. I seem to recall he got another game the next week before being dropped the week after that.
I still remember him playing at an earlier time, playing in defence with a young Sam Fisher, in a backline decimated by injuries (Max & Penny I think)
just goes to show how screwed-up the system is when a guy like ferguson can't get a fair go and sometimes that a frustrated individual can survive on a list.

he was 23 FFS!
just saying he was let go at a time in his development when he was improving.
not suggesting we would have won a GF with him in the 22 just saying that we now need his type.
WinnersOnly was correct in his assessment of Bevo. He recruits meat and potato style players.
We assume that Stanley will be a KP but his workload will be managed.
We need a mature forward from the VFL.
