Its really dissapointing for those living in ghe ideal world, but plugger's points are pretty valid

You cant compare AFL to football codes in the UK or the USA. Neither of them have large parts of the population that care zip for the code. You cant play midweek AFL games like soccer and we dont have conferences like the US.
The draw will never be even until Collingwood and North/Dogs etc have similar membership numbers and popularity....and that will never happen. Theres a hell of a lot more things lopsided about the AFL than just the fixture.
Anyone who thinks that the tv rights package wouldnt be significantly reduced if the AFL flipped the bird to the networks is living in dreamland...and that reduction would endanger the struggling clubs...fact.
Its frustrating, and yes parts of it prolly arent fair, but welcome to footy in the second decade of the 21st century.

So on that basis the Olympics should also abandon "fairness" and create seedings that ensure USA and Jamaica get paths straight into the 100m finals because that will attract a higher price for the TV rights?

Umm no, but care to show me where theres seedings in afl football? Totally off-topic, but would you abandon seedings at Wimbledon or the FA Cup?? Make it totally fair and random, so that the top 2 players in the world could potentially meet in the first round??

Not off topic actually - the seedings point you make is a good one - it actually shows another example of a rigged fixture......makes me feel a little better about our rigged fixture when you point that out!

So now you think tennis is rigged. Seedings doesnt make it rigged. It gives the people who pay money to watch a chance to see the best games later in a tournament. You need to stop thinking everything in this world is one big conspiracy and finally use common sense when thinking.

FFS plugger - "rigged" also means something is fixed in place for a reason, not necessarily a conspiracy.

Do you understand that, or did you not learn that in Grade 3 today?

We did examples on corrupt in school today. tomorrow we are doing rigged and then next week we are doing the most successful run sporting business in Australia. This week was on some supporters of AFL clubs and next week is on the AFL.

A 'seeded draw' in Tennis is based on a 'rolling' 3 years of results thereby allowing officials to 'rig' the draw so that ideally the best 2 players meet in the championship decider (the GF for want of a better term).

The same thing happens in Horse Racing in 'Handicap' events where the handicapper gives various weights to horses so that ideally they will all finish in a dead heat.

Something similar happens in the Soccer World Cup where teams are seeded (based on previous results) so that hopefully the best teams are all still there in the later rounds.

AFAIK none of these are meant to apply to AFL Football.

The main argument from fans of all teams seems to be this issue of 'maximizing crowds' over 'perceived fairness' when doing the fixture.

An interesting question for me would be who's preference list(s) get taken more seriously?
ie would St Kilda's requests get preference over North Melbourne's if there is a 'clash' of requests?
Would Port Adelaide's get priority over Collingwood's?

For argument's sake, let's imagine that
WCE
Freo
Adelaide
Port Adelaide
Sydney
Brisbane
Gold Coast
all put in as a primary request home games against
Collingwood
Carlton
Essendon

If accepted by the AFL, it would mean that those 3 Vic Clubs would travel 7 times during the H&A season of 22 games. We know that's not going to happen.

SO
Which of the interstate Clubs won't get their request?

we're not going to perth First or 24th
HAWTHORN has every reason to be feeling unloved, copping a tough travel schedule.

Not only do the Hawks have to head to Subiaco for the NAB Cup opener, but they also have trips to bookend the season
and we get a good gate vs Pies

Why do the AFL leak out bits about the draw for a week, rather than just release the whole thing, say, last Friday?

Are they testing the water a bit and open to making late changes if people arc up enough about the leaks?

This year, the leaks have been very minor, so I don't understand their strategy.

Cats and Hawks and Now possibly Roos don't think their minor... Hawks have already mentioned having to travel for NAB cup.

It normally goes on for about 2 weeks. The drawn GF probably condensed things a bit this year. Also, it's not just the AFL that is leaking bits n pieces to the media, clubs are leaking bits n pieces too. Remember the Kerfuffle last year when Richmond leaked a bit too much to Caro !!

It's to give them extra days in the paper.

If you release the fixture and all the news relating to it on one day, that is one days news.

You have 6 leaks and a full fixture release you have 7 days worth of news stories.

So probably two games against both Collingwood and Geelong, which will mean home games against both Collingwood and Geelong, as well as two MCG games (at least).

Will be interesting to see how many (out of 7) interstate trips we get.

Playing Geel and Coll both twice!

So already it is shaping up as a hard draw.

Point of order, FA Cup draw is not seeded, it is purely luck of the draw, which is part of the romance of the competition.
Interesting to see how the draw will go if you have both teams in one of the northern states having a bad season, will they get their two rivalry games.
Personally, I believe the Sydney teams will never build up much of a rivalry.

Lets get negative before they start and then you can get really negative. Lets hope they all work because IMO the AFL is so much better than the VFL ever was but some just like the old romance of the VFL.

And good to see we have at least been given 2 huge games against the Pies and Geelong but I suppose like and fixture there will be some who dont like that and plenty of other aspects of the draw. Personally though I would rather see us play these sides once because to be honest I couldnt give a stuff about blockbusters, I would rather the easiest draw possible.

So, playing Geelong (Away) at the G in Round 1.
Any thoughts on who we may get for Round 2 at Etihad Eastern?
