Interesting comments by Ricky Nixon this morning
Not sure if anyone heard him on SEN this morning. Was asked to compare St Kilda and COllingwood's draft weeks.
He stated that you need to add 2-3 players to your list every year. Collingwood added Krakour and Tarrant (was there another one) and St Kilda are at in a different place. They have some young kids to add to the list internally - Stanly, Stevens Heyne. So thinks we are in good shape.
Also rated Ross and Malthouse as 2 of the top 3 coaches in the AFL.
Got me thinking to the fact that we haven't blooded those players to any real extent and therefore have similar potential upside to clubs that are adding to their list via rade week.

We gave a few games to young players this year. We are not rebuilding and we got a few games in to guys like Miles, Steven, Armo and Stanley. The fact is we gave them a taste and then let them go hungry. It might be a better way than just playing them even when form isn't there.
I don't know why the list management gets so criticised on here. Keeping experienced players out of the team when we were always hanging around the top 4 would have been a little dumb.

5 prelims in 7 years. 40 wins from 49 games.
2009 and 2010 were 2 of the 5 best years ever by the St.Kilda FC.
Thanks for all your efforts Saints.

The Pies have basically pushed up all of their young talent into the seniors and are now having massive clean-out, to make way for a new bunch of kids.fingers wrote:

.
However even with that they will have a number of players running around for depth that are past it.
We havea good batch of kids ready to emerge next year, but the caveat is that they need to step up and they may or may not...

I heard ricky and noted how he said he had changed his style of negotiations and what he now does is differant to how he handled players in his early years _ I had felt he was operating differantly

for several years there used to be only a few trades- under 10 each year why are so many putting such emphasis on trade/ exchange week
when renewal comes from young and that is still to happen.

What we need is changes in our List Management personnel.stinger wrote:this years recruits = 4/5th of sfa....of course we need changes in our list management.....saintspremiers wrote:simple, because we blew last year and this year.aussierules0k wrote:Me either.gringo wrote: I don't know why the list management gets so criticised on here.

Finishing at or near the top of the ladder, especially in these compromised drafts, means we have to work smarter in our recruiting.
John Beveridge was able to recruit some gems from late order draft picks, Fisher and Gwilt come to mind. That was when his instructions from GT was to get the best players available.
What has happened now? Are we choosing players to fit a preconceived position rather than the best available?
Australia...... Live it like we stole it....... Because we did.
Also took Luke Ball and Xavier Clarke as his first two picks in the superdraft......GrumpyOne wrote:What we need is changes in our List Management personnel.stinger wrote:this years recruits = 4/5th of sfa....of course we need changes in our list management.....saintspremiers wrote:simple, because we blew last year and this year.aussierules0k wrote:Me either.gringo wrote: I don't know why the list management gets so criticised on here.

Senor Grumpy it appears we dont have any recruitment personnel. So changing them wont be difficult.GrumpyOne wrote:

Although I have been told not to worry because all our young listed players are superstars in the waiting so recruiting staff really are a waste of money time and effort that only the other stupid 15 clubs worry about. Armo Steven etc are going just to tear it up and have "break-out" years in 2011.

On list managers there is a guy from Brisbane that will need a job soon.
I'm amazed that Tarrant will find a spot without upsetting a premiership player in either the back or forward line.
You would think Dawes and Brown would be the guys that collingwood may leave out. They may be very pissed at that. GWS needs defenders and forwards. Lucky they haven't signed that big dumb guy yet.

I don't understand this comment. According the Saints website we have three people directly employed for recruiting: John Peake - Recruiting Manager, John Beveridge and Paul Collins - both Recruiting Advisors.Con Gorozidis wrote:Senor Grumpy it appears we dont have any recruitment personnel. So what. If we recruited players to replace some of ours so be it. If you are good enough you will get a game and if not you will not. Doesnt mean the club will go backwards. i would suggest that can only improve the club.gringo wrote:On list managers there is a guy from Brisbane that will need a job soon.

Have you seen the real position of our draft picks this year.
As Gold Coast has already taken 12 kids out of this draft, St Kilda's first pick will actually be the 36th kid taken.
St Kilda's second pick will be somewhere between 54 and 62
St Kilda's third pick will be somewhere between 71 and 79
See http://www.saintsational.com/forum/view ... hp?t=66698
In the past we would be calling them an early 3rd round pick, a late 4th round pick and a late 5th round pick.
We will be extremely lucky to find any player better than what we have got already.
The 2012 draft won't be any better with GWS coming into play.

agreed our draft position this year is very weak to say the least.
we did not trade up to better it either.
the bit that is niggling at me is that under Lyon historically our side has improved through our trades, less so our drafting, especially over the last two periods. And to compound matters our last two trade efforts have been very poor as well.

I wonder how many clubs have 6-8 (relatively) on the cusp like us (ie as opposed to kids buried in a list)?ace wrote:saintbrat wrote:But the draft hasn't been held yet has it?stinger wrote:this years recruits = 4/5th of sfa....of course we need changes in our list management.....saintspremiers wrote:simple, because we blew last year and this year.aussierules0k wrote:Me either.gringo wrote: I don't know why the list management gets so criticised on here.

Most of Heyne, Lynch, Walsh, Stanley, Simpkin, Miles, Smith, Gaertner have had and opportunity or shown SOMETHING at some stage.
Seems to me things have been designed to rebuild when the window is absolutely shut ie in two years time.
I'm pretty happy with the strategy overall.
"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'

It seems that whatever approach we adopt there'll be a certain percentage of posters who are unhappy. Last year the club received criticism for the way it approached Trade Week and the Draft. And there’s no doubt we're in a difficult position given our high finishing position (again) and the compromised nature of the draft.
To my way of viewing there was not much of quality in this year’s Trade Week offerings - I certainly don't think there were any bargains. I can’t see any point in picking up other clubs’ GOPs, and in doing so, limit our draft picks or have to delist more players.
The only club in a worse Draft position than us chose to trade their first pick for Andrew Krakouer. Should we have done so? I can only imagine the outpourings had we offered up our first pick for a 27 year old ex con and he didn't produce as expected.
We've said we'll pick up kids and admittedly it won't be easy to find good ones with the picks we've got. But nonetheless some posters have been crying out for an influx of youth so what's the problem? The only way of securing really good picks is to offer up members of our best 22 and once again there'd be hell to pay if the resultant draftees turned out to be duds.
All in all, given what's happened in the last few years I'm happy enough to go again with what we've got and to try and add a couple of kids for development.
