The Shneids appreciation thread

Hi all,

Allow me to introduce myself. I've been a St.Kilda member since I was 8 yrs old in 1990. I'll never forget those early years going down to moorabin to watch the likes of Winmar, a yound Harvey and Burke, Loewe, Gilbert McAdam, Dean Rice, Danny Frawley, that ruckmen Harding, that CHB Phillip? Morris, (who else was there?) and of course the Big Boy. Maybe it's because I was so young at the time, but of all the football I've seen in the 20 years I've been following the saints, nothing has come close to the sheer brilliance and game dominating presence that Plugger had.

I've been reading this forum for about two years and after several attempts have just had my account activated. One thing that I've noticed that I don't really understand is that Adam Schneider doesn't really get much love. For some reason, people seem to be quite cold on Schneids, and I have to ask, "why?"

In my opinion, Schneider is in the top 3 at our club in terms of pure, raw skill. His disposal is first class, He kicks and handballs to where players are going, he opens up space for them with his disposal. Of course, his left-boot is long, penetrating and deadly. He's one of those forwards that make opposition teams kack their dacks because he can slash you open with that left boot in brief spurts. HE'S THE SORT OF PLAYER WE NEED MORE OF!!! Fast, attacking, dangerous players. That's what Shneids is. I'd rate him over Milne, because he's less error-prone and is better suited to play in the centre; he's more adaptable.

Does anyone agree???

Good work hungry, Schneids gets a lot of love from me, although I put him between 5-10 on my list.

He's a ripper bloke and just needs to improve 5%, mainly he seems to go missing for periods, to make a massive difference to our midfield rotations and forward pressure.

Good to hear from you hungry. I had similar problems getting onto the forum too, so I understand your frustration.
I love all those old players too, but I think the thrill of all time for me was watching Baldock weave in and out amongst packs of players as only he could. I was just a kid. It was always my birthday treat to go to a game every June, as we lived in Canberra and drove down and back. I seem to remember that I often got to see a Saints/Richmond game. We would literally drive down just for the game, arriving in Melb around lunchtime, and leaving to drive home right after the siren!!!
I agree with you on Schneids - just wish he could be more consistent with those moments of brilliance!!
I read somewhere ages ago that his parents drove to EVERY game to watch him, when he was playing for Sydney. Do they still?

Surely your not blaming 13 for the GF replay? We were beaten by a better side on the day, full stop. For me, it was as obvious as over when Riewoldt played on.. Just not our day.

But I actually find myself as being quite optimistic for next year. In '09, we played the best football we've ever played. Clearly the best side in the comp. All we had to do was play that well again in '10, and we would of gone all the way. As it happened, due to the series of unfortunate events that marred the season, we played not anywhere near as good as in '09, yet that was still good enough to make the GF.

If we can get back some good footy karma, which we didn't have this year, bring in the likes of Steven, Geary, Stanley, Armitage for the likes of Mini, Eddy, Peake, (not that I don't like these players, but to make an omellete, you've got to break a few eggs), then anyone can see that we're clearly still top 4 material. Since around the end of '04, we've experienced a period of sustained success and I'm sure that with Ross in charge, the new Frankston facility, the new ethos of proffesionalism that surrounds the club that we can actually thank Grant Thomas and Butterss I believe for ushering in, there's no reason to believe that the club will drop its bundle.

Hi Hungry

Had a great year, but his lack of preseasons over the journey were telling towards the end of the year, seemed to run out of puff.

Hope he didn't have any off season surgery, and he can 'enjoy' his second in succession.

Started off slow this year, I was a little critical, but he won me over...very intelligent footballer, and crucial to our late burst towards the finals.

I would rate Schneids second only to BJ in terms of disposal by foot. He is a great kick of the footy. Not sure if i've overlooked someone obvious in that assessment, but it's a sad fact that anyone who is a beaut kick of the footy tends to stand out in our squad.

Had a pretty solid year. But unfortunately, as a few others have pointed out, when I think of Schneids I immediately think of those GF misses in 09 and 10.

another good penetrating kick off the backline
another option to free BJ up forward?

By the time James Gwilt plays his hundredth game he will be recognised as the best kick in the team.

Currently I would say Goddard, Gwilt and Schneider make up the top three, by some distance.

Love the Schneiderman, but........
Bloody hell he owes the team and us supporters (and himself) for the misses in 2009 and 2010 in the GF's...... They should be his bread and butter.......
Still love the Schneiderman though..........

Can see him playing a similar role to that which Aussie Jones played toward the end of his days.

Hhhhmmmm - Its been a while since he has regularly shown it - but a certain #26 is pretty deadly with his left as well.

No thanks. Aussie played on Schneids in the Prelim in 05 and was way too loose in the last quarter. Schneids would be the same.

I rate Schnides very highly and love watching him around goals. It is a shame to have to use him further up the ground as he is a natural goal kicker.

If we can get another mid going this year he may get back closer to the sticks where he can do more damage on the score board.

Is my favourite player. Love him. Hes tough as nails and a genuine country kid. Seems like a top Bloke. Put him at the top of the "blokes ud most want to have a beer with".

Do you actually watch games? He busts his balls week in week out playing the hardest position on the ground (small forward).

I am convinced RF is Grant Thomas. The use of the term "mentally fragile" and wowserism are 2 strong GT traits....
