His dad was a bloody good player (and ultimately a good St Kilda person) who coached us into the finals for the first time in 20 years in the early 90s.
Which doesn't necessarily count for much, except that sons of former players are often driven to try to match their dad.
Ross might be able to turn him into something.

His Brisbane form seems to indicate that he just doesn't have what it takes at AFL level. In 24 games his highest possession count is 19 and he has only kicked 1 goal. Was touted as a skillful goalkicker as a junior, seems like a struggling tagger at senior level.bigcarl wrote:Ross might be able to turn him into something.

He looked ok the couple of times I have seen him. He was actually touted to go to us in the draft and we didn't take him.
I didn't think his skills were bad just maybe a little light framed still. If we don't give up anything to good for him I think he will be a good borderline 22 player and put an extra running back in the side to release Gilbert. If he built his tank up a decent mid fielder.

He should fit right in at St Kilda then, going by a number of posts since GF2.mad saint guy wrote: His Brisbane form seems to indicate that he just doesn't have what it takes at AFL level.

Well considering we did the right thing and let Vossy pick up Goose & X for the price of a kebab, now would be a good time for the Lions to return the favour.gringo wrote:He looked ok the couple of times I have seen him. He was actually touted to go to us in the draft and we didn't take him.

Sheldon for pick 6 or something would be okay.
The other side to that of course is given list numbers are restricted, and draft picks compulsory, another player coming in would mean it's possible someone who wasn't going to be delisted/traded will in fact have to be delisted/traded.

Have watched a fair bit of the Lions ressies, due to a mates boy playing, so have watched Sam with interest over the alst few years, being son of Ken.
Has pace, foot skills are only average at best, and he turns it over too much due to wrong decisions. However, a new club combined with a bit more confidence, and he may be a okay pick up. Certainly preferable to Travis Johnstone.

Johnstone is a better player than Sheldon but in the long run if I were to choose between the two I'd choose Sheldon. He is 21 but just needs heaps of time to get his skills right. I hope we keep Johnstone for a year, he isn't that bad just a skapegoat for when our team went bad this season.

Doubt it would happen in 2010 with the professionalism of Ross and his team but it's happened before so you never know.

Yeah why???
Because Tom Lynch senior played 300 games with the Saints. Didn't you know that?plugger66 wrote:Why Tom Lynch?SaintPav wrote:and Tom LynchFortiusQuoFidelius wrote:Fergus Watts???dcstkfc wrote:Hope we aren't taking him just because of the club connection.

Yeah - would have been terrible to get Jack Riewoldt and Frawley wouldn't it?
Lance or James??

If you look at the history of drafting it isn't very successful.
We are a fair way down the list in a compromised draft. Anything good shouldn't have made it through the 17 yos that the CG got. The value is in vfl, safl and wafl.
We will be taking a gamble with any player we take the advantage of existing players is that they have some development already and may not need years of magoos to get them ready.

I remember Sheldon being involved in one of the most awkward press conferences ever.
Coach Michael Voss tried to get funny by introducing Lions great Michael Voss to hand over the guernsey... and didn't get much of a laugh. Not satisfied to let it die, after handing over the #3, he handed back to himself as coach...
It was cringe worthy. Sheldon standing there holding his jersey with an awkward smile planted on his face.
Sheldon's got pace and he's a tough nut. Good by hand, not by foot... I've wondered whether it's partly a matter of pace-of-the-game, disposal at full speed problem.
I'd always heard the Lions were pretty high on the kid (and the #3 would seem to back that up), but he didn't get a lot of time this year, so the glandular thing is interesting.
