Moments that lost us the game.

Post: # 1008813Post undecided »

1 goal 6 in the second quarter and one complete miss by schnieder. so thats 7 opportunities which at least 5 of which were very get-able goals. if we kick those goals we probably go into the 3rd quarter with a small lead and we would be full of confidence.

start of the 3rd quarter schnieder hits the post and then gets a deliberate out of bounds free kick against him. collingwood get the ball inside their forward 50 and we cant clear and they eventually score. so we go from having the chance to be around 3 goals down but we fail to take it and end up 5 goals down. after this moment collingwood go on and put the game to rest.

there were other occasions where we miss and opportunity and then collingwood got a goal.

long story short goal kicking cost us the 2009 premiership and potentially cost us the 2010 one aswell.

we were not as bad as so many are making out we were. yes we had a terrible 2nd half b ut by then collingwood were unstoppable. but they were only unstoppable because we allowed them to be. we failed to put scoreboard pressure on and they did. if we put scoreboard pressure on when we had the chance we would have given ourselves the chance we needed to be premiers.

FWIW, not "moments", but the inability to win centre clearances:

Lack of foot skills.

I think it was a huge mistake playing most of the first quarter with Mini and Eddy on the half forward line. Every time the ball went near them it instantly rebounded. It's hard to see us winning the premiership if these two are in our best 22.

I agree completely Undecided.

Schneider would've been looking to make up for last year - instead the demons came back and bit him harder.

Please...let's win a Premiership before GEELONG!!!! (O.k., so we've missed that opportunity...maybe let's win the next one before Geelong????)

Roo's miss from the goal square.

Set the tone for the day.

This.

Diabolical.

How about if these highly paid professionals cant hit a target, they at least get taught to kick it into space in front of one of our players when going forward.

Oh, and learning to kick it between the big white sticks even occasionally may prove be advantageous too.

Some time ago Peter Schwab wrote an article about his visit to Manchester United. He asked Alex Ferguson what they do with players who can't kick. Ferguson's reply was that they don't have any players who can't kick.

This came back to me this morning. We have at least one player who can't get within 10 metres of a target from 40 metres away. We have another couple who can't kick 40 metres. And another who, it seems, would miss running shots for goal all day long.

We've managed to paper over some of these skill cracks for most of the season but under extreme pressure it can all come unstuck, and it did.

The game was lost at this point....

Saints skipper Nick Riewoldt backed the push.

"There's no show without Punch - so hopefully they (the AFL) will look after the players," he said.

Worrying about his pay cheque, 4 days prior to running out for a Grand Final. Fair dinkum.
Is it any wonder, when he was gifted the ball in the goial square, he pranced in to allow the cameras to get a good shot of him, whilst a bloke who was really switched on and focussed on the task at hand ran him down from behind?

The most overrated player in the comp, by a streak.

I was bordering on embarrassed when he whinged to the crowd at the Grand Final parade about not showing his respect whilst he was talking, and I was disgusted when he couldn't get his hand out quick enough to shake that slug Demetriou's hand immediately after the siren with an instant big smile across his face - then to come out 3 days later asking for more money to represent his club for a second Grand Final in a row was sickening.

Compare his leadership in the circumstances, to Maxwell's.

There's your answer to where it was lost.

All talk.

Why are people surprised that dud players, have dud skills?

We recruit the guys, then act all surprised when they play to their ability.

You conveniently forget about the group of filth players who were on Twitter whining about not getting enough tickets to the replay...

Strange how they managed to still perform when their minds were not on the job.

I've seen some of the best players over the years get caught unawares like Roo did in front of goal on Sat, so big deal, it's just footy. The game was lost when RL went defensive too early in the game.

The day we traded for Brett Peake. Over the two legs he set up at least four (4) Magpie goals.

Nah the game was lost when the ball just wouldn't bounce for us, with the ball always bouncing the wrong way we never had a chance.

Perhaps Roo was just trying too hard to do everything and be everywhere.

Twice, arguably.

"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'

I think the moment we lost this game was when Grant Thomas selected Ball ahead of Judd when Butterss was trying to persuade him to take Judd ahead of Ball!

History is history B4.

We are talking about this game.

Undoubtedly Roo playing on in the goal square and getting the shot spoilt.

Did incredible things for their confidence and SFA for ours.

Absolutely...showed we were panicking and they had gotten into the head of the captain of the team, and potentially the most influential player on the ground. You can raffle any number of stuff ups after that...isn't reliving the experience great fun!?!
