Looking towards 2011
To be honest I'm not as upset as I was last year because I truly believe that we are a big chance again next year.
We have some good youngsters coming through: Steven, Armo, Walsh, Stanley. Heyne, Smith, Lynch, etc.
I think we have to bite the bullet with Kosi he is too slow for the game, he pulls the whole side down. I reckon we should try and trade him and a 3rd round draft pick to try and get another teams ruckmen.
We should also dispose of either Eddy or McQualter don’t add much to the side and are keeping youngsters out of it.
Dempster is solid but just an average player
Steven Baker doesn’t offer much anymore. I reckon he may retire
Peake Needs a big preseason if he was to stay in the side, will be playing vfl next year
We need to get Raph fit and back in the side.
Alot of Our Average Players are keeping the youngsters out of the side. We have to let the youngstes develop our bottom 6 aren't going to get much better so bring in the youngsters!!!
MY ST.KILDA 2011 TEAM
B: Blake Dawson Miles
HB: Gram Fisher Gwilt
C: Goddard Dal Joey
HF: Schnieder Riewoldt Gilbert
F: Steven Stanley Milne
Foll: McEvoy Hayes Jones
Int: Armo Raph Geary Smith
Emg: Ray Walsh Lynch
***Trade Kosi and try and get a ruckman from another club. Who would then be first ruck and McEvoy would start on the bench. We also need to draft another young ruck to develop in the coming years.
In: Miles, Raph, Armo, Steven, Geary, Smith, Stanley
Out: Peake, Mini, Dempster, Ray (dropped), Eddy (delisted), Gardiner, Baker (ret.), Kosi (traded)
The Rest: Pattison, J Smith, Winmar, Johnson, Heyne
List Changes
Out: Eddy (delisted) Baker (ret.), Cahill (delisted), King (ret.), Gardi (ret.), Kosi (traded)
My team isn't completely different but the changes would add a bit more flair to the side and a bit more excitement. Collingwood have shown that young players offer a lot even to a top side. The only player in that team above that has not played a h&a game is A. Smith, and he has looked really good in the VFL side.

Well you can't tell how well a kid will be unless you give them a chance. I think many of them have proved they can play and some just need to be given the chance to show it.chook23 wrote:Has it crossed your mind that these YOUNGSTERS may infact average hence THEY did not forcr their way into the side ala Pies Youth
The youngsters i put in the side are:
Stanley - will hopefully develop over the preseason
Steven - has proved he can play
Miles - played really well in the last few games of the h&a
Armo - still needs to prove himself (pace lets him down)
Geary - Been in the side most of the year
Smith - most people on the forum would agree he will be a good player

Get rid of McQualter - our most over rated player by a mile. Keep Eddy - still young and better this year than last and can play the McQualter role.
Let Gardnier retire - play Kosi as 2nd ruck behind Big Ben.
Stanley must play as 3rd tall.
Need to be more attacking and get game time into Armo & Steven.
2011 should be Bakes last, Milne's last as well.

It sounds like most don't think we can get back to a GF. If we can force our way back you never know we should get some luck fall our way.
That said Collingwood play a non conservative brand of attack and it works. I think our slow exacting movement can be a real dire game plan. We need to get something happening soon or the game will pass us by.
I think we should look at the fact that we have made it to the big stage twice in a row and have an awesome win/loss ratio in the last few years.
the biggest failing is the inability to have a plan to attack the sides that can out run us. You can have an alternative playing style for different teams.
They can obviously do it when they want- North and Port just need to develop it.

apparantly Gardiner is playing one more year (as per other thread). and thank god because Macca needs more time to develop and our game style requires us to win a fair share of hitouts.
Kosi will not and should not be traded, firstly we wouldnt get anymore than a second round pick for him and next year that would be in the 40's I think.
The biggest problem with our forward line is not Kosi or Milney as most on here would lead you to believe, its the fact that besides Roo, Kosi, Mileny and to some extent Schneider, we dont have any other dangerous goal scoring options, we need to play something other than two defensive half forwards. Thats where Walsh, Lynch and Stanley can play a role. All three are as or more mobile that Mini or Eddy but they all have to learn to also have a defensive mindset when they dont have it.
Personally I would move Gilbo to half forward permanently and look to Walsh, Lynch and Stanley for the other spot. Either way if we cannot prevent Kosi and Roo from being double and triple teamed we will find it difficult against good opposition

I like your thinking MadDog! Very concise summary.BringBackMadDog wrote:apparantly Gardiner is playing one more year (as per other thread). and thank god because Macca needs more time to develop and our game style requires us to win a fair share of hitouts.

Agree that there's a lot of presumption of brilliance being placed on kids who aren't setting the world on fire...odd. However, the Pies kids did not all force their way into the team...in some cases, there was simply no choice but to put them in, due to gaps in their list. We don't have glaring gaps like the Pies had in recent times...just lucky for them their kids have stood up.chook23 wrote:Has it crossed your mind that these YOUNGSTERS may infact average hence THEY did not forcr their way into the side ala Pies Youth
