We need to recruit with more emphasis on skill...
We all know Lyon loves a role-player but it seems to me he almost values a footballer's ability to play a role over their ability to play football.
Our entire 22 must must must be comfortable with the footy in their hands and confident in their ability to use it. Naturally these players will want the footy in their hands more than those with poor skill.
You then teach these players roles.
IMO we have more than a few players who are more comfortable without the footy and panic whenever they get it. This leads to a player not presenting as they should when under immense pressure.
Collingwood's team basically to a man are very good with the footy and are confident in their ability to use it. Geelong the same.
If Luke Ball is Collingwood's worst user of a football, they're doing OK IMO. May not always hit a teammate lace-out, but he rarely coughs it up.
Playing a role can be taught at any age, pure ability cannot.

I think theplayers he has gone for have been mixed skill wise.
ie say Gardi, Lovett, Schneider all have/had pretty good skills. Zac is apretty fair kick.
But I take your point......and unfortuantely with Bevo as head recruiter he often seemed to go with players who were lacking in footskills.
BJ and Dal being some of the are exceptions, and BJ's drafting was an obvious one.

Yes, we need more pace - lots of it. Although, speed is probably not enough.Winmar7Fan wrote:SPEEEEEEEEEED!!!!!!!! We need some lightning quick kids like Essendon and Collingwood are targeting.
Our players overall even the top enders lack in this area. But if they had some super quick kids around them IMO things would be very different for us.
Pace is pointless if the delivery is not there - look at Peake's last two games.

Exactly, we need the balance between the two. Someone like, if not Andrew Krakouer. Hopefully Jack Steven and Alistair Smith will step up, because they both seem pretty good by foot, especially Smith. If they both step up next year, it will help us considerably. But I would absolutely love to get someone who pays like a Krakouer, or Lovett, etc.Beej wrote:Yes, we need more pace - lots of it. Tambling is certainly an option, although is his kicking really good? I haven't seen him enough lately to remember just how good it is. As for getting him cheaply, I believe there are a few clubs interested in him, so I don't think he'll be that "cheap".eppo67 wrote:Tambling is very quick & needs a change. He could be very good pick up if cheap! BTW when do the players get a decent training/rehab facility and move out of that 1980's dump.

let's not get obsessed with pace because in itself it is not enough. you also need to be a footballer who can get the ball.Winmar7Fan wrote:SPEEEEEEEEEED!!!!!!!! We need some lightning quick kids like Essendon and Collingwood are targeting.
you can also overcome lack of leg speed to a degree by moving the ball quickly and with precision.
Agreed, its one thing to get a player with pace, however he is useless if he lets you down with skill. Example- Brett Peake, yes he is fast but he was exposed in the biggest game of them all, costing us 2 goals in 2 GF's with shocking disposal. If we are to get somebody with speed, they need to be able to deliver the ball

I obvously mean that. Collingwoods kids are not only quick but skillful enough as well. But in saying that when you are quick enough as they are even some poor disposals didn't matter because they were still able to get it back by smothering us with pressure from their speed with tackles as well.bigcarl wrote:let's not get obsessed with pace because in itself it is not enough. you also need to be a footballer who can get the ball.Winmar7Fan wrote:SPEEEEEEEEEED!!!!!!!!
