Discussion about the captaincy
*edited the thread title, so it's less specific to allow people to have their opinion, I have expressed mine.
My last post for awhile, but something I have been giving some deep thought in recent weeks.
Don't flame me, I realise Roo is a superstar, an absolute gun....
However I would give the captaincy to Brendon, it's in no way disrespectful to Roo, I just think BJ deserves his turn.
Brendon has put his hand up this year through his actions, his composure, and his ability to lead from the front.
Roo plays one of the hardest positions on the ground, come finals, I think he would actually blossom given the opportunity to just concentrate on playing that role, without the added burden of the captaincy.
Just let Roo enjoy his footy next year, no shame in that.

Please don't stop supporting our captain. Riewoldt didn't fire today, but he has led from the front in so many finals - he is our captain.
Goddard is a superstar, but Riewoldt is our captain.

I am supporting him, but I also think it would be somewhat irresponsible to ignore something very special blossoming before our eyes that is wearing the number 18.battye wrote:Please don't stop supporting our captain. I will not hang my head in shame, where did I bag anyone?
I expressed an opinion, without swearing, abuse and calling our side something like the AINTS
I feel strongly about something and expressed it, disagree by all means, but be ashamed I will not.
He will be captain. In 3-5 years. Right now we have one of the best 5 players in the game and an inspirational captain in Nick Riewoldt.

I think Lenny and Goddard are our spiritual leaders.
Lenny is rapidly reaching the end.
BJ still has several great years ahead of him.
I agree he should be the captain - I think he would thrive on it.
Whereas I think it is a millstone for Roo.
Freeing him of the captaincy might see achieve what we know he is capable of.

Right with you there SainterK. I said this exact same thing in a thread a couple of months ago and I'm even more sure of it now. BJ is clearly "the man" when it matters the most. Either him or Hayes, then Roo. This is not taking anything away from Roo, but just because someone's great at footy doesn't mean he should be "captain". He would still be the "poster boy", but it's time to take a load off his shoulders and appoint BJ. I don't believe Nick will lead us to a premiership. He's just had 3 golden opportunities and we have 0.
I've been watching BJ closely since he first arrived at the club and, as I said a couple of months ago, he just had "future captain" written all over him, pretty much right from the start. If we want to win a flag, BJ needs to be named "captain".

I can't believe some of the stuff I'm reading tonight.
Gotta expect that when you lose a GF I guess.
But Nick is our captain and thats not going to change anytime soon.
BJ will be captain one day. Of that I have no doubt. He will be vice captain when Lenny retires - nothing surer. May even go with two vice's next year. BJ is certainly blooming into the leadership role.
To make wholesale changes on the back of a poor GF performance is reactionary in the extreme and disrespectful to the great job that Nick has done.
IMO of course.

"At the end of the day, a coach and a fitness adviser doesn't make a good football team, they're not the only ones who got us to two Grand Finals." Lenny Hayes. 27/9/2011.
Well I just read and re-read, and nowhere do I see SainterK bagging Roo, either directly or by inference.
She stated that Roo is a superstar and a gun- which he is. Just expressed an opinion, which you may or may not agree with, that he has a lot on his plate and that perhaps we could look at the possibility of relieving that extra pressure by at least considering the possibility that there might be another suitable candidate for Captaincy in BJ. No harm in expressing that view. You don't have to agree with her: but I think I do for what its worth.

Round 21
after previous 3 finals
ill timed rubbish

The heart Goddard shows is amazing and I wouldn't mind him being captain at all, and yes it might even help Roo in a round-about kind of way.
BUT...Goddard has been known to give some serious sprays to players out on the ground, and also suffers from severe anger at times, do we want these traits in our captain? I'm not saying no, I'm just asking the question.

I'm not calling for his head.
I admire the man enormously and can't fault the job he does as captain.
I also see that BJ is captain material.
I'm just saying that I can see SainterK's point of view. I don't think its a slur on Rooey, just that Goddard's leadership was noticeable again today and the post was just a way of recognising that. (I'm guessing- I'm not in SainterK's head so I might have read it wrong. But that's how i was reading it.)
If Rooey stays Captain for the next however many years there will be no complaint from me.

Then we can probably forget about winning a flag. Roo has too many mental scars and this is not an over-reaction to today, because I wrote this two months ago. It's a simple fact. In my opinion, BJ is the better option. Becoming more so by the week.saintnick12 wrote:I can't believe some of the stuff I'm reading tonight.

Tough decisions need to be made, because we continue to fail to win a premiership. Close may be good enough for some, but it's not a premiership.

It wasn't a slur on Roo, I was actually trying to think about what is best for him when I posted it...I thought I made that clear.SaintDebi wrote:Fair point too.chook23 wrote:why not mentioned after Round 1SaintDebi wrote:Well I just read and re-read, and nowhere do I see SainterK bagging Roo, either directly or by inference.

I also said it was my last post in awhile, the season is now finished, so I don't feel bad about the timing either.
Feel sad people question my motive, I love Roo.

I agree with you SainterK.
Roo has had a tough year and I wouldn't be surprised if he stood down from the Captaincy.
I always wanted Lenny as captain, but seeing how Roo has grown into the role, to be arguably the best player in the comp, has changed my mind. I'd love to see BJ follow the same path.

I'm so glad that you saw the intent in my post, I hadn't cried much until now, but I am now thinking people saw my post as bagging Roo.Bernard Shakey wrote:I agree with you SainterK.

I only want what is best for the guys....I think Roo has to juggle so much and under massive external expectation.
I truly feel it would be best for him and his footy, that was my motive.

Goddard is also in the best 5 players in the game, and seems to be a great leader too. I'm a bit torn on this, I think it would be a good idea to give BJ the captaincy, but Riewoldt is also an exemplary leader, with an exemplary attitude....dcstkfc wrote:He will be captain. To discuss taking the captaincy from our captain and best player on the day of a losing GF where he's had a shocker is premature and reactionary at best.
Imagine how Roo would feel if that happened.
How can being deemed not able to handle being the captain and best player - how can that be a positive for him. The club dont' believe he can handle it all so they take it away from him and give it to BJ who stood up better in these two games.
Just can't see how that's going to help ROO at all...infact I think it would have the opposite effect.
We wouldn't have even been in the GF if not for his great leadership and playing ability in the earlier finals.
Totally agree with BJ's leadership being so important though. Still think he will be captain one day...just not yet.
