Re: Banger

Mark Williams would be perfect choice for the Roos. High profile, controversial, good in the media. Great on player development and culture. Malthouse would also be a good choice. As would James Hird. If they appoint yet another untried assistant, it will be a disaster for them. Especially someone l...

Re: Dan Hannebery - call it

Hannebery helped give us the tiniest bit of relevance and credibility that we leveraged into our great trade period last year. In my view, our 2019 trade period would not have happened if Dan hadn't come across a year earlier. Dan was playing excellent football in the first half last night and he sa...

Re: Rendell’s rant

GT flew Lyon down from Sydney to his house in October 2005 and basically offered him a blank cheque to join the Saints as senior assistant. Things might have looked very different in 2006 with Lyon in charge of gameplan - instead of getting smashed every time we played a side coached by a good tacti...

Re: March series lessons.

Agree with the above. How do you play Bruce, King, Membrey, Marshall, Ryder and Battle all in the same team? You can't or they'll crash into each other. We let him go for less than his value but in 2 years time when King is hitting his straps, Membrey is kicking 45+ each year and Marshall is the dom...

Re: Max King and Round 1

In his first two years (28 games), Nick Riewoldt kicked 23 goals and 20 behinds.

Over the rest of his career (308 games), Nick kicked 695 goals and 435 behind for an accuracy of 62%.

Inaccuracy is normal for a key forward early in their career.

He was the backline assistant coach to the most miserly backline in AFL history at St Kilda in 2009.

Would have him back in that type of role but not list management.

Re: Marshall over the moon

I'm concerned King could be injury prone, his athleticism could be his curse. The way he was tunnelled under that ball that led to his injury has me concerned. Yes he was a high DP but so was Paddy. Wasn't Riewoldt incredibly athletic? And he got tunneled repeatedly. He also missed most of his firs...

Re: Jack Newnes

Jarryn Geary has been outstanding as a small defender for years, maybe ask some small forwards about how effective he is?! Between 2014 and 2017 (4 seasons), Betts kicked 50+ goals each year, averaging nearly 3 goals per game. He was clearly the best small forward in the AFL. We played the Crows 5 ...

Re: Jack Steven ... 58 :(

I'll say it again - we traded the Jack Steven of 2019. We traded a player who doesn't show up for training all the time. We traded a player who doesn't make all the team meetings. We traded a guy who might very well decide during the course of next year that he's done with professional footy for goo...

Re: Draft Hand

The way I look at it, we started a fortnight ago with pick 6 as our draft hand for 2019. Nothing else. We used that for Brad Hill. Would we have drafted a player as good as Brad Hill with pick 6? No guarantee. We then traded Bruce for Howard, Acres for Jones, and pick 35 in 2020 (approx) for Ryder a...

Re: Jack Steven ... 58 :(

It's really hard to accept but the Jack Steven we traded is not the Jack Steven who was on our list for a decade until the end of 2018. We traded the Jack Steven of 2019 and all that comes with that. We traded a player who won't ever play 22 games in the midfield in a season again. We traded a playe...

Re: Dan Butler

Lonie's first 5-6 weeks of 2019 were A-grade for a small forward. No coincidence that the team was playing well during that period. Small forwards tend to do better when the side is doing better. More opportunities, higher scoring, more time in forward half, better ball use. It all makes the life of...

Everyone in Australia had Paddy or Petracca at #1.

Paddy is finished and Petracca has been serviceable at best. We weren't the only ones to muck it up that year.

Wilkie is a better one-on-one contested player and a slightly better intercept mark.

Roberton is a better offensive player with a more penetrating kick and better rebound.

Interesting times.

Re: Buncha $h*t Kickers.

Goal kicking is not rocket science. Dixon marketed himself as the holder of mythical secrets of along-lost dark art that few others could teach. I actually think recruiting Dixon is a big part of the problem. It elevated our goal-kicking problem so much that I reckon a lot of our players actually be...

P.S. For what it’s worth the senior coach now barely makes a positional move on match day. Fagan, Worsfold, etc. Clarkson does it all before game day. We need a coach who is not fire and brimstone. I think it will be Brett. I work a lot with guys under 30. They generally hate being yelled at, they ...

Re: Ratten vs Richardson

Membrey converts from 25m out and we probably beat the Blues. They are 5th/6th ranked team in the AFL since the bye. Six weeks is not long enough to assess a coach. One thing for sure - Ratten has got 100% commitment and buy-in. The players have given supreme effort every game and there hasn't been ...

McQualter had an outstanding 2009 season and was in the top 5 in the AFL for goal assists. He also averaged 5 tackles per game as a small forward and 1 goal per game. McQualter absolutely deserved his spot in that side and Jack Steven (aged 19 with 1 game of experience) would not have offered more t...

Re: Second Ruck for 2020 and beyond

Agree with above two posts. Plan for 2020 and beyond will have King in the side with Bruce and Membrey. Although they are all fairly mobile, a resting ruckman would be too much in my view. Ideally we would find a utility who can play ruck and give Marshall a chop out. The modern Jason Blake. If Carl...
