Beetham or Bob Murphy...?

Post: # 1822284Post saintsRrising »

Just listening to SEN this afternoon and one snippet that came out was that according to Andy Collins, who was an assistant coach at the Saints, that:

Bevo wanted to recruit one R Murphy in the 1999 Draft. He showed video footage of the draftees to the then assistant coaches and asked them who they would draft, and all bar 1 went for R Murhpy as well with our first pick.

Our then head coach overuled Bevo and we called out Beetham instead.

Bob who was also on the show today, said Bevo rang after the draft to apologise for not taking him.

Another F**K up by the Saints, this one turned out to be a whopper.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Watson wanted to replace an irreplaceable R Harvey who was 29yo at the time with another strong bodied inside mid.

As it turned out, Beetham was gone in 3 seasons and Harves played another 9

Coaches interfering with recruiters....my pet hate. Stan Alves was just about the worst. Ross Lyon did it in 2009 and 2010 and set us back years.

Beetham was very talented though.

We could have had Johno too but not meant to be

Stan Alves overruled Beveridge in 97 because he wanted Ben Walton after seeing him once

Beveridge wanted Nick Stevens

Beetham was talented, but had an ego and was as lazy AF and missed the draft camp on purpose because he couldn’t run 10 in the beep test

You could tell similar stories at any of the clubs. Who cares?

If only, if only...we didn't take Steve Sims with pick 2 in the 86 draft. 🙀

Watson wanted depth. He wanted us to be less reliant on our stars and to be able to spread the load. Given our history and the environment it does makes a bit of sense that he wanted to change the fact we relied on Harvey/Burke for 60 touches week.

I, for one, am happy that RM has no association with this club.

He’s an insufferable twatt!

Look again it's the Flash!!
