No excuses now - we need to play Longer and Marshall together

Re: Whose BIG idea?
A Marshall-Hickey combo alternating ruck and forward would be handy...

Re: Whose BIG idea?
Oh please we don't have the best ruck in the comp and he got beaten today by a better ruckman and probably learnt a lot. That's is not what cost us the game today and to argue that is just stupid. We should have put them away in the second quarter and we didn't. They then had a awesome fourth quarter and unlike us they kicked goals. I blame the poor long goal tactics and poor accuracy at goals

Well it goes hand in hand.DJ Higgins wrote: βSat 18 May 2019 5:44pm Oh please we don't have the best ruck in the comp and he got beaten today by a better ruckman and probably learnt a lot. The pattern is that Marshall tires and gets climbed all over in his last quarters.
Weβre calling them learning curves I guess but I think itβs just stupidity...
Look today... when he finally fell away/was on break they ran away with it
My worry is that these heavy patches will destroy his confidence

Re: Whose BIG idea?
Marshall isn't the first ruckman Grundy has beaten this season. Gawn thrashed Hickey & Vardy last night - but guess what happened?

No, so irrelevent that it doesn't warrant thinking about.ss1986 wrote: βSat 18 May 2019 6:36pmToo technical for you to comprehend?

So irrelevant 3 commentators felt the need to point it out on the broadcast too. RightoLinton Lodger wrote: βSat 18 May 2019 6:50pmNo, so irrelevent that it doesn't warrant thinking about.ss1986 wrote: βSat 18 May 2019 6:36pmToo technical for you to comprehend?

Re: Whose BIG idea?
The game wasn't lost in the Ruck, our midfield were smashed in the last quarter.ss1986 wrote: βSat 18 May 2019 6:52pmSo irrelevant 3 commentators felt the need to point it out on the broadcast too. Given the way Collingwood sling shot out of defence in the first three quarters, how do you reckon it would have been with Marshall in the forward six instead of Parker, Young or Kent?
We wouldn't have been close at 3/4 time.

That's what makes it more difficult to comprehend why we continued with the same setup in there until we were 7 goals down.
The mind boggles

Re: Whose BIG idea?
Didnβt mind it.. Longer would have been killed and had no influence around the ground..
Grundy does that to everyone. Marshall wasnβt the problem... our horrid kicking to Grundy in the last quarter from Ross etc is.
Ross is putrid and the sooner we offload that guy the better. Prefer Dunstan to him

Re: Whose BIG idea?
A few token moves late, and of course, rotations. So yes, you are correct.
Doesn't cut it for me... Glad you are happy with our one dimensional favoured midfield. It works a treat

Re: Whose BIG idea?
Short memories on Longer. He would have been a handicap of only 17 vs 18 once the ball was bounced and the quality of his tapwork is greatly exaggerated.
The main problem this season is that after some close wins over teams who will not be in the GF this year that many got way to excited about being a threat this year, which with our injury run including the Steven issue was just not going to happen, Yes maybe sneak into finals, but win the GF no.
The good thing this season is that some players like Marshall have emerged. The best thing for our future now is do everything to make them develop and bloom.
Marshall up until recently was pegged as a back up key forward and back. Thrown the No1 mantle in the seniors as both Longer and Pierce were injured has allowed everyone to see the RAW talent there for him and the club in this position.
But that talent is RAW as since joining the Saints he has played very little football in the ruck in either the seniors or Sandringham.
Every game he will be learning hugely. Last week he battled manfully against Mummy., and was more effective around the ground. This week he was against arguably the competition's No1 form ruckman and went ok while beaten. BUT he will have learnt a lot from this game.
I personally am excited about how good Marshall could be from 2020 on. Only 23 now with little ruck experience at this level.
So leave him to play No 1 in the ruck. That is a truly BIG idea. We will be be the long-term winners from this.
Longer is not the answer.
With the rest of the team the club now needs to focus on MIDFIELDERS WITH CLASS. Lack of mids that use the ball well is what is mainly holding us back now, and will continue to cruel us till it is solved.
How they will solve that I do not know, but until they do we will not be a power team.
Players like Ross are support mids, and as long as we have mids like him as our top mids we are going to continue to struggle.
Geeze I hope that Bytel can come good.
