We need a bit of toughness!
I wish that our side had a bit more mongrel.
When looking back over the years, we have had a few players who were pretty tough.
Not as many now however?
I had a bit of fun when compiling the following team of tough nuts. Some only played briefly.
One still plays and I hope that he turns out to be really tough... Another ended up as a coach and was probably tougher at his second club.
Some are probably out of position!
Arguably some weren't the greatest players. Indeed, some may be not be remembered much.
Anyway...
Neale Gehrig Baker
Guy Carlisle Malthouse
Muir Burns Cunningham
Owen Hamill Hall
Jackson Lockett Keogh
Ditterich, Vidovic, Krakouer
Bob Pascoe, Herbert, W.Jones, Black
Coach - Killigrew
Any thoughts?

My GOD,
Look at that forward line... the opposition defenders would be afraid to touch the ball, anyone foolish enough to play as a spare back is going to the hospital.
Chances are they’re four down at 1/4 time

Russell Jeffrey was one of the toughest I've ever seen.
He terrorised Gary Ablett Sr one day and that didn't happen very often. Ablett didn't want to go near the ball that day.
Good player too. I think his career was cut short by injury.

Jeffrey originally played for Geelong before two stints with the Saints. Great player on his day but we traded him to the Bears anyway.

This current crop have plenty of mongrel, that's what I loved about the Murphy sledging and the way they rallied for Big Jake.

From Darwin. St Mary's. Same club as Ben Long.saynta wrote:Jeffrey originally played for Geelong before two stints with the Saints. Great player on his day but we traded him to the Bears anyway.
Went to Geelong but didn't play any games.
Played 42 games for the Saints.
Was a big deal for an Indigenous bloke to come down to Melbourne in those days.
Was one heck of a player. And tough. Bloody tough.
Lovely bloke apparently. I think he got in to coaching or is still involved in footy.

Re: We need a bit of toughness!
My main Russell Jeffrey memory ...
Unfortunately in R8 1990 against North Jeffrey collided with Lockett injuring the great man.
At that stage he had kicked 52 goals in those 8 games - on track for over 140 goals.
Was out injured for the next 8 games.

Who did we get for him (or his pick)?saynta wrote:Jeffrey originally played for Geelong before two stints with the Saints. Great player on his day but we traded him to the Bears anyway.
As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”
St Kilda - At least we have a Crest!

Russell Jeffrey was an amazing player to watch - just fantastic. I remember him being pivital in winning against teams considered better than us. He was Captain-Coach of Jerilderie at just 24 years of age, before coming to us.
