Wilson on Nick's book
http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/t ... z9x4p.html
His teammates over close to two decades are largely lauded with notable exceptions. Clearly Rhys Stanley tested Riewoldt's patience as the captain tried everything to make him the player the Saints thought he should have been. Riewoldt's own mental battles did not come about due to Maddie's death alone but his honest appraisal of his constant anxiety, his dreadful fears for family and close friends every time he left them and the debilitating panic attacks make you wonder how he managed such an impressive playing career twilight. He says he sought professional help and also credits the ongoing support of the South African Pastor Sean from the Brighton Baptist Church whom Maddie brought into the family. His description of the concussion he suffered in Adelaide in 2015 and learning all over again that Maddie had died is heartbreaking. No wonder his beloved Catherine – the beautiful Texan he met on a footy trip on Vegas – wanted him to retire then and there. Catherine – along with Maddie – appears to have been the catalyst for his reintroduction to religion and it was wife and mother Catherine who wanted to ensure the anxiety Riewoldt suffered for a while every time he left home for the football club is not inherited by their children.
An entire chapter is dedicated to St Kilda and scandal and yet the Mad Monday burning dwarf incident is omitted completely. Reportedly it proved one of the more tougher assignments to make sense of on paper and for everyone's sake it seemed better to leave it out. But its omission is disappointing. Still, the impression is that only a few memories or pieces of family history were too difficult, too painful or too personal to put into this story. And yet Riewoldt's stubborn pride comes through when he describes being forced to perform a mea culpa in front of the entire team for a post-game outburst at a staffer overseeing a fan-engagement exercise involving player selfies. Riewoldt could not see beyond his frustration at a poor performance.

Re: Wilson on Nick's book
God we were murdered by the umpires in the 2009 grand final. Just look at the photo of Scarlett and Taylor holding Nick - he had no chance of having an impact.
Add that to the Schneider hold in the last quarter, the Hawkins “goal”, Bartel bear-hugging Lenny for three quarters, etc, etc, etc.

Re: Wilson on Nick's book
Good article on one of the all time greats in Nick. I am however sick of endless excuses for not winning GFs, and probably if some of the more senior players had put their fat egos aside and got behind Watters as the coach, then no doubt we would have done much better. Though its history and we must move on.

Re: Wilson on Nick's book
Scott Waters had a special talent for alienating people. The club did the wrong thing selecting him in the first place. The decision to sack him was ruthless, but entirely justified and necessary. Another year of him and the club may have imploded. Like his former colleague, Mark Neeld. A divisive influence.

"No, you didn't."
"Yes, I did."

Small man syndrome.
A coach has to have the ability to inspire, lead and motivate.
Watters was great in interview, according to some-
but being disliked by most of the staff and players
and being so full of himself, he was never going to last.
Forget about 'egos' of players,
he carried on like a half-pint Hitler

Having family in Perth, I can tell you that
Perth folk, in the main, have a sort of 'small man syndrome' which is caused in part by their isolation and distance from other cities.
'Chip on the shoulder'.
They would argue over the colour of orange juice.
Angry and negative is what Perth people are.
I did live there for a few years, and they are horrible to be around.
So the dwarf has the double whammy of small man syndrome+Perth nastiness.

Why would you want to abuse the man who abused Harvey (in his third last game) after the siren in a qualifying final to the extent that some of his own teammates apologised?Saint 58 wrote:Where is Scarlett ??

Seeing that photo just shows how biased the umpires are when you consider the gift free Ablett got directly in front after HAWKINS hit the post but given a goal.

Total rubbish. I have lived in Perth half my life and you couldn't be further from the truth. For the most part Perth people are great - Nick Riewoldt last week acknowledged the great support the Saints players get from the Perth Saints supporters when they play over here.MickThomas wrote:Perth folk, in the main, have a sort of 'small man syndrome' which is caused in part by their isolation and distance from other cities.Drake Huggins wrote:Scott Waters had a special talent for alienating people. Re: Wilson on Nick's book
Strangely enough 2009 was the last year we had a successful outcome from umpires. We did well against the league average but not in that crucial game. In 2010 umpires were virtually neutral but negative nonetheless. Years 2011-2016 (included) we were the only team not to beat the league average. Conversely there are many who did quite well. I can table the stats in detail but wont unless you are interested. I have review the last free kicks received over a 22 year span, excluding 2017 which is due for inclusion now. These are from the website All the Stats. My 2 key measures were consecutive frees per club over various annual time spans or annual club frees for, against the league average.suss wrote:God we were murdered by the umpires in the 2009 grand final. Interestingly comparisons of both measures aren't that different. Clear trends in bias are concerning, a fact the AFL just seems to ignore.
I started this analysis in 2012 on the back of an envelope as I suspected the Saints were doing so badly in umpiring decisions. They were, as were some other clubs. I later found the stats website and did a bit of work over 5, 10 and 21 years initially.
Oh to be a Geelong or Eagles supporter. They dominate the last 10-11 years. Hawthorn, North, Richmond and Sydney are the risers and in a pack just off the leaders despite their whinging supporters in many social media forums. Ones who have done badly are Brisbane, Essendon and Melbourne, Collingwood and Carlton are too good either. Saints are on their own over the last 6 years not beating the league average.
Yes, I am a sad case, I know but instincts proved right here. I believe the Saint and Lions did better this year but yet to do the work to prove it.
Midfield clearances and clear winners are needed to make an effective forward line.

It takes a highly driven individual to engage in this sort of exercise,
one which, once commenced, will take on monumental proportions
and be bigger than anticipated.
Frees are one thing out of our control.
One factor that players can work on, is their accuracy and delivery.
If they reduce clangers by 6-8 per game, that should make up for any green bias?
A mid putting a lace-out pass on the chest of a leading forward cannot be ignored or beaten by the green folk.
Work on what they can change.
Unless you're a Pies supporter- Eddie will just rant and rave and get his own way.
Or an Injector.
A real Sainter will pledge allegiance to the ❤ and despise the Pies, the Blues, and the Injectors.

Okay, I have to admit - I had to google Brabham - mind you it was only gazetted in 2011 so I think that is a fair excuse. Until then it was part of Henley Brook apparently. Next to Whiteman Park - which is a great part of the world. I'm sure a lot of Perth people haven't seen much of the world (excluding Bali of course - which doesn't count), but I know a lot who have. Just look at the photo of Scarlett and Taylor holding Nick - he had no chance of having an impact.
Add that to the Schneider hold in the last quarter, the Hawkins “goal”, Bartel bear-hugging Lenny for three quarters, etc, etc, etc.
