ST KILDA veteran Leigh Montagna is unsure when a decision will be made on his future.
The 33-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and while he wants to play on, the club has not decided whether it will keep him.
"I'm not sure when the decision will come," Montagna said on Tuesday.
"As we understand, it's not my decision anyway.
"The club's going to have a fair influence on that and when that is, that will take care of itself. At the moment, we're just worried about playing good footy."

Re: Joey on the future of Joey
His form is good but another year on he is stopping players like Rice and White coming through but those guys need to bust the door down and make the list managers retire Montagna if they are doing their job... If they are thinking that Montagna may be required for 2018 it means these boys are not showing enough & that would be disappointing...

Re: Joey on the future of Joey
He looked gone a month ago. Derm the germ's article seems to have breathed new life into him. He's been good in our wins. Whether this all means he can go out on top at the end of the year, or whether they try and squeeze another year out remains to be seen. I'd love to see him finish the year on a high and retire with dignity. He's been a champion of our club.
I started with nothing and I've got most of it left!

Re: Joey on the future of Joey
He had a couple of bad games in the middle of the season, but, apart from that, he's been playing at AFL standard all year and his value in terms of helping to maintain on-field structure and ensuring that the game plan is carried out is probably greater than we can fully see.
We have three veterans in our top 22, which is not an excessive number IMO. There are 19 other spots for up and comers to grab by playing well enough at the VFL level. I think the main player who Joey has been keeping out lately is Savage, and I prefer Joey.

Re: Joey on the future of Joey
A month or so ago i would have said it's time; but yep, ever since the Dermie incident he's come out with a point to prove and if he keeps that form up there's no reason why he can't continue next year.

It is very disappointing he is putting himself in conflict with the club. Not a good bloke.
He should just go on his own accord rather than leaving all this unsettled ill feeling. s*** form.

Just ridiculous Con… he wants to play on, but isn't sure if the club wants him to go on yet… nothing more.Con Gorozidis wrote:It is very disappointing he is putting himself in conflict with the club. Not a good bloke.

Re: Joey on the future of Joey
I don't like his chances of getting another year, but agree with Vazelos… we really need some young guys to make the decision easy. Unfortunately Joey is still comfortably in our best side at the moment, we'd probably have lost a game or two more without him this year.
I'm really hoping McKenzie can take his spot, Rice and White need to do a lot more by the sounds of things.

Joey would love to play on.
He is passionate about the Saints/
Would be great if this club champion made it to 300.

Re: Joey on the future of Joey
To me this a no brainer.
Of course he plays on next year.
Do we have the depth to pluck an equivalent player out of Sandy to play his role ?
No.
Our depth is actually pretty thin. Once the queue to get a senior game goes back to the Nepean Hwy then retire him.
We can play all our young hopefuls to get games into them and some will revel. But we won't be as competitive on the field. We need to remain significant and an attractive prospect to sponsors, prospective members and gun players on the market.
Would he be handy next year as a backup even if he only played half the season ?
Yes.
A reliable, experienced player that has a lot to give to younger players.

He's worth another year
On less money of course
If he knows exactly what the club want from him and is happy to take the paycheck
Then the future will be so bright he'll have to wear shades.

Would love to see him get to 300 games but I don't necessarily think we need him next year - happy to sit on the fence with this one

Happy for him to play on as long as he's happy to play quite a few in VFL and fill a hole when needed.

He can say what he likes, you might not agree with him,
but I think he has actually thought this out in detail.

Re: Joey on the future of Joey
Joey has given great service to the club for 16 years, and whilst he has stated he wants to play on next year, said it was up to the club.
Just normal business that goes on every year at every club.
Hardly makes him "not a good bloke". Strange comment.
Anyway, if he is fit, should go on, particularly if Roo does not.

Wants to play on.
Up to the club and the personnel after trading, draft prospects and salary cap taken into account.
Pretty sensible I'd say!

All Joey is saying is he wants to play on next year but the club gets to make the final decision.
He is servant of the club and will do his absolute best in the mean time and the club will do what the club will do.

Gee I hope they are paying him wads, the more the better just to make up the minimum percentage of the salary cap.
When the club lands a few superfish they can trim Joey's salary or delist him while staying under the salary cap.
