Sam was on 5AA this afternoon. Said it was his decision to retire but he didnt sound too convincing. Said he wanted to stay on for 2017 but once we got Brown he knew the writing was on the wall. Doesnt know what he will do now. Really good interview seeing it was with that clown Steven Rowe.

The 34-year-old says that he would have liked to have played on in 2017, but hamstring injuries and the introduction of Jake Carlisle and Nathan Brown to St. Kilda’s backline pushed him into hanging up the boots.

“Right throughout the year I probably said that I would have liked to have gone on one more just depending on how my body sort of held up,” Fisher said on SEN Breakfast.

“Knowing that Jake Carlisle was coming into the team next year, I thought maybe with him playing on the big monsters rather than myself, I could have probably gotten back and played my role a bit more which may have helped a little bit.

“My hammies sort of let me down through the back half of the year so yeah, just decided to call it a day and with the Saints coming to get Nathan Brown as well, that made my life a little bit tougher in getting a new year’s contract.”

Fisher says that he always happy to remain a one-club player even after his delisting, essentially ruling out any prospect of looking for a new club for one more season next year
