Saintsational's favourite Saint - Robert Harvey
Just to keep people interested over the summer and to talk about footy, I thought I'd start something using the polling function.
I'm going to take the 32 Saints that have played the most games from 1965 to 2014 and pit them against each other in a popularity contest. You can use whatever criteria you like to make your choice and every day there will be a new thread with a voting option and a chance to discuss the players involved and why you voted the way you did.
It will be a knockout competition with the winning player progressing through to the next round.
The matchups in the first round will be based on games played for the Saints since 1965 so Robert Harvey (383) will take on Carl Ditterich (169) first followed by Nathan Burke v Greg Burns, Stewart Loewe v Allan Davis etc.
I'll try to keep this thread updated with the results.

Re: Saintsational's favourite Saint
I just want to apologise in advance for tomorrow's match up. I didn't want to impose my opinions on any seedings so seedings are based on number of games played for the Saints. So it's 1 (Harvey) v 32 (Ditterich), 2 v 31 etc.
Today is 13 (Max Hudghton) v 20 (Andrew Thompson).
Tomorrow is 5 v 28 and it's tough for a first rounder.

My best versus my favourite. Good luck with that. If people use best its a landslide. If people use favourite then maybe the underdog gets up.

Perhaps we could also try and get Grant Thomas back on the forum over summer.

Re: Saintsational's favourite Saint
Maybe you should add a 'repecharge' function to your tournament?
Maybe the 2 highest voted for eliminations can get a second chance against the 2 lowest voted for winners before the next round?
It seems ridiculous to me that Lenny (surely a top 4 contender) should be eliminated purely because he comes up against plugger in the first round?

I hear what you're saying Mr Magic and maybe we'll run it again in another year with different rules but this was just to have a bit of fun over the summer and to see who comes out on top. And to generate some discussion about footy rather than boring bickering or politics.

Re: Saintsational's favourite Saint
Mr Magic - I see your point BUT if they met in the Grand Final - Lenny would have lost so in the end all we know is he is not our favourite Saint. What we don't know is where would have ranked. Next year maybe,?

What happens if there is a draw, do we have a replay or extra time?
I note that Goddard has crept past Peckett on late postal votes, but the official count still shows Peckett?

I'll give the casting vote. Hasn't been necessary yet.Enrico_Misso wrote:What happens if there is a draw, do we have a replay or extra time?

Poll officially closes when I get out of bed.

Maybe a similar poll but say its for the best saint who has ever played for us. Be interesting how different it is. Maybe you can seed it yourself. Who cares if you have your own bias. People will still whinge about uneven match ups because they don't get when 32 players are involved but it would stop a Lenny, Plugger match up in the first round.
Re: Saintsational's favourite Saint - Robert Harvey
I reckon you could do the seedings by having a pre-poll poll. Ask the question: "who do you think is in the best ten Saints of the last forty years?" and list the fifty Saints who played the most games in the last forty years. Make it a multi-select poll so people can choose any ten. At the end of that process you sort them by the number of votes they got and the top 32 becomes the seedings. Proceed from there.plugger66 wrote:Maybe a similar poll but say its for the best saint who has ever played for us. Be interesting how different it is. Maybe you can seed it yourself. Generally I think it's a great idea, even if people don't quite get it sometimes and whinge about stupid things. It is the internet, after all!
Re: Saintsational's favourite Saint - Robert Harvey
It's bit of fun that will always provoke vigorous discussion/debate.
...to me it seemed some folk had trouble grasping the concept of 'FAVOURITE' Saint.
...no point arguing about who is the best player, the most skillful player etc.....
.....if you personally wanted to use those criteria to vote that's fine.... but don't malign folk who used a different criteria to determine their FAVOURITE Saint.
