Gwilt ahead of Bruce

Post: # 1474128Post #gosaintas »

Surely this had to be for disciplinary reasons. Gwilt is too small for tall forwards, too slow for nimble forwards, too unco for mid sized slow forwards...he just doesn't belong at the senior level. Bruce is a far better option. We already have Dempster who plays our fumbling mid size backman - why would we need two of them?

We also should have picked Rhys "THE PRESENCE" Stanley for last week. Another strange selection.

Richo said in his presser before the match that they weren't satisfied with Bruce's game. I think that that is all there is to say. Players, and especially young players, are given certain roles and statistical targets that would be unnoticeable to the outside observer and it seems most likely that Bruce didn't meet the expected standards.

I think this is one of those decision that are based on the Long-term vs winning this week.

To try and beat WCE Bruce would have been far better.

However to make Bruce a better player (and indeed all the youngsters) the coaches obviously wanted to drive a point home.

Gwilt is certainly passed playing on big forwards, and the smaller ones he struggles as his turning circle is now that of a Mack Truck!

Lots of players need to learn things. Shenton has good attacking flair as a defender,. but needs to tighten up defensively.

Depends on what Lee's KPIs were.

I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.

That Geelong game was so confusing.

Lee subbed at half time, Bruce played up forward - then coach drops him as he wasn't happy with his game. Very confusing...

Gwilt has a good long kick. It's really only him and Dempster who can switch the play around back which Richo seems to like (there was a stat saying we play the ball around the boundary more than almost all other teams). There is a still a huge question mark on both Bruce and Delaney on their ability to use the ball well.

Webster kicks it at least as well as Gwilt as does Murdoch.

Obviously not worried about winning it then. Basically Gwilt is useless. Not his fault he's getting a game

Webster looks promising but he's focusing on the basics- sticking with your man, tackling pressure, third/fourth up in packs, how to handle AFL level pressure. With Fisher and Gwilt possibly retiring and Gilbert struggling to get on the park, next year a huge responsibility is going to fall on Websters shoulders - taking kickouts, switching play and if he miscues it its almost a certain goal and then getting pilloried on this website. This is the year for him to not have too much responsibility on his shoulders and watch where Gwilt and Dempster position themselves to set up the switch, managing defense and attack, when to go wide and when to go through the middle. I think at the back of Richo's mind is sucking every last bit of experience he can out of Gwilt, Jones, Hayes etc because at the end of this year we officially go off the cliff and the next gen will now carry the burden without having the experience they probably should.
