Watters comments on Wright on SEN

Post: # 1304050Post Pureoctain »

Interesting, he was asked to name two players he thought would be supercoach smokies for us and he said Lee which is not suprising. But he also said Wright, so I guess that means he see's him playing a lot of senior football this year. He also talked about how mature he is for his age earlier in the interview. From what I saw against Sydney wouldn't be unhappy with him in the best 22.

Wright looks a player. Lee hasn't shown much yet so that's a pretty big wrap considering Maister looks like he's taken out the same role. I have a heap of faith in both those guys though but Lee looks more 2014 at this stage.

If Lee plays I suspect it will be in the role Siposs had wrapped up before Goddard's departure saw him move to defence. Lee isn't strong enough to play FF (where Maister should get first crack) but rather an athletic third marking option who pushes up to the wings frequently. He'd play the traditional medium half forward role, despite his height.

Lee Riewoldt Milera
Saad Maister Milne

Don't be surprised if Wright gets the nod for round 1.

He has the toughness that Jason Gram lacked, so a pretty good replacement in my view.

Watters is also a huge fan of Minchington. I haven't see this guy play. If anyone has, can they provide some info? Watters sees him as a small forward.

He is small, played well at Sandy last year and flys under the radar, does a lot of good in and under work. Not sure we need any more small forwards. He may be able to play mid.

After watching the replay of the Sydney match, I've realised I missed a fair bit of good work from Wright on the first watch. I still maintain that he'll need to clean up his disposal, but his attack on the contest, positioning and running was top notch. He seems an athletic footballer rather than an athlete who plays football (something we have a lot of). I could see Wright playing 6-8 games as sub this year and maybe a few full games. He has the strength and confidence for AFL right now but may lack experience and endurance. I think with a season of senior footy and another pre season he should push for a regular spot in 2014.
