That won't silence the doubters until he puts pen to paper

He won't leave, said that all along.

Surely the only doubt now is Saints trading him.

He is the perfect player to build our transition from the Riewoldt era. If you get rid of him you create a bigger void between the senior list and the young players.

I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.

So the entire article is basically SOS saying 'We know he's no chance of leaving, but we'd love to have him'.

Man, I wonder if Watters could command an article like that talking about Buddy.

'Yeah, he's really happy at Hawthorn, signed up, said he wants to be a one club player....but if anything happened, he suddenly wasn't happy, we'd definitely be interested.'

Derp.

In the case of most of these there was not a lot of choice with the club losing the player.
Lockett, Woewodin and Healy were offered more money than their current club could offer.
Wanganeen & Judd had the "go home" factor.
Not sure about Diesel and Stewart.

Wilson was traded three times, BTW...Once from Footscray to North Melbourne after playing 9 games then from North To Melbourne after playing 39 games. Then from Melbourne after 154 games and a Brownlow Medal to St Kilda where he played 7 games. I am not sure that he was a champion at any stage when he was traded. He certainly wasn't when he came to our team. He just fell into line with some of our bizarre "quick fix" type recruiting decisions of that era!

FWIW I remember Woewodin being forced out due to the Melbourne Salary cap. Pretty sure he was happy to stay. I'm sure it was something like the dee's signed him to a big contract after his brownlow ( his form never lived up to his Brownlow year). Actually reckon it was one of those deals where Melbourne were paying part of his salary at the Pies.

Yabbee Jeans got rid of Ian Stewart because of his off field behaviour apparently. Would'nt he of been handy in the 1971 Grand Final against Hawthorn!

He didnt do what he did until he was with the Tiggers and that was in 1978, it was speculated it was due to a nervous breakdown. His trade was all cloke and dagger stuff involving a trade with Richmonds Billy Barrot and not that Yabbee wanted him out for his off field behaviour.

He's a huge chance to leave

Just going on a process of elimination. Most big names are mentioned as possibles have resigned except Goddard and Cloke.... Cloke not on GWS list.

yeh theres plenty of others that were signed sealed and delivered to gws that never ended up there. perfect example taylor walker. no one saw the phil davis move coming.

how i see the goddard situation: the club knows they are in the best position to bargain. if we lose him we get very good compo picks in a super draft. they have offered him a fair contract but are not going to break the bank to secure the future of 1 player. goddards team has counter offered with something thats above what the club wants and is prepared to pay. the club has moved on and is going to secure the rest of the talent and will come back to goddard with the same offer. it will be up to goddard to take it or leave it.

do i think he's already signed to gws: no.

do i think he will end up at gws: who knows. i dont think goddard knows this yet. i think his preferred option is to stay a saint and get a good deal that would still be below what GWS would pay him. problem this amount is still above what the saints are prepared to pay.

sounds reasonable - this way the club can come back and say:

1. all your mates have signed on for less...
2. theres not the money left for what you want so.....take or leave it....

IMO

Glass half full till the end eh.....

FWIW
I see a positive either way...

He's a great player worth keeping... And for once I'd like to keep a Star

But, we are regenerating a team, and losing an Star can be a catalyst to doing so.

Thats my view also.

I weigh this up against the question which is: can we cover the loss of a Goddard?

and tbh he will be a loss, but I reckon on current output we can.

He is not a mid. He does not win his own ball. Hes a floating HBF in the mould of Fisher with good foot skills (that appear to have deserted him of late..). To me hes looking awfully slow, getting caught and hurried a lot.

The unkown is: could he really actually be a fwd?

What we cant make up for is the loss in versatility he offers should he go.

So upshot is if we can keep him on our terms/price - great as he offers the age bridge to teach youth.
If we cant.....draft pick time.
