Should they do the Anzac thing on 28 April?

Post: # 1210991Post saintspremiers »

Our game is on April 28, yet they'll do some Anzac Day stuff like the Last Post/minutes silence etc.

Is that appropriate given it's 3 days after the day?

IMO Anzac hoopla should only be on Anzac Day, not other days.

They can truck out the usual "Lest We Forget" on the banner perhaps but the rest is not reqd IMO unless we actually are playing on the day itself.

Thoughts ?

I personally woudn't describe remembering those who died serving our country as 'hoopla'.

I think that it is important. Especially for our children to have respect for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

So I'm all for taking a moment throughout the round to honor our heros.

It's a pity that some are turning ANZAC Day, like Australia Day, into a racist rant. :(

Remember what? What it is was like to be sent to be shot at or to shoot at others in some foreign land? Who would want to remember that? Perhaps you mean the people who didn't go off or were sent to war, and that that they should remember how lucky they were.

Last night, pubs and clubs all over the state (and perhaps elsewhere), had Anzac Day "Eve" booze ups with free or reduced priced grog (for a period) and "Anzac" biscuits. The sanctimonious chest beating of the profiteers of war continues unabated. Perhaps we should remember that.

You can some some stupid things and that is one of your better ones. Who is talking about whether they should or shouldnt have gone. Why would we want to get into that at this time? In case you hadnt realised it has happened. They cant go back. Lets remember the poor people who didnt come back and their poor families. You are a friggin idiot sometimes.

If people did want to raise the issue, I would have thought that this was the appropriate time to do it.

However, as usual, your trolling technique was to take issue with something I didn't say, and to then be abusive about it. The issue of the how and why we get involved in wars is rather large, even for this board, and me.

I actually like how VB Beer and Anzac day has been neatly wrapped together. I really do. Only problem most people will have today is if they drink too much VB and can't remember anything. Isn't that ironic?

My Dad won some medals in the Second World War, and after he returned home, they gave some more to him and put his name on a wall in Brisbane with other Army guys. When he was in the nursing home before he died, the medals went missing. Does anyone know if the Government would replace them? I usually think about this at ANZAC day... don't know if I really should do it or not... and I don't even know if they are replaceable.
Thanks if you know,
Mark

The point was you basically said lets not remember the soldiers but who is making money and why were they there. Well I think we should remember the soldiers and their families and your comment was insensitive IMO of course. I hope I havent made you to upset and you quit this site again. That was funny. Even you must laugh at yourself.

Have a look at facebook. Remembering our war dead, has become a forum for the "get out of our country" crowd.

We all get the opportunity to remember. It's that the AFL have denied the fans of the other 16 clubs of going and watching THEIR team play on this day !!

That is sad.

There a victims of war from every country and most of them are civilians not soldiers.

Anzac Day is a day to remember all victims of war from wherever you are from IMO. It should get broader than what it currently is.

Perhaps we can get our banner sponsored by VB and have the team run out through a guard of inflatible beer cans.

Then after lining up for the one minute of silence the players could all raise and skull a glass of VB.
That would be a tasteful and appropriate way to remember the diggers.

As someone who is old enough to remember the VFL days when Anzac Day was a split round, the Last Post and Reveille and a minute's silence was the commeration of Anzac Day.
In other words it wasn't overdone and turned into the commercial interests of two specific football clubs, or the makers of VB or a potato chip manufacturer.
And I would think if any one could speak to the returned serviceman from both wars, that's all they would like.

IMO theres no bad time to commemorate those who have fallen. Sadly however this appears to be some sort of AFL compromise to giving the actual day to Ess and Coll (oh except if ANZAC Day is on a Fri/Sat and they need another game at night for TV coverage)

Dont agree with you post, as usual, but your point about ANZAC day eve being a massive piss up is accurate, and just points to a bigger issue underlying Australian culture.. Get pissed at every opportunity... Not too sure how much remembering was going on last night....
