some background on Cockie

SANDRINGHAM recruit and former West Coast midfielder Adam Cockie is barely known by those in the east but he is already changing that.

The 22-year-old appears ready to shrug off his injury-prone tag for another shot at the AFL ranks after a two-year stint at the Eagles.

He is one of the reasons why the Zebras are expected to be a big improver this season given his tenacity and power as an inside midfielder.


After an impressive fourth season with Subiaco last year, Cockie attracted the interest of Collingwood in the lead-up to last year's AFL draft. He missed out and followed Claremont premiership coach - now Saints development coach - Simon McPhee to Sandringham.

He knew he had to leave a two-team state to give himself the best chance of resurrecting his career.

"That's why I made the change because there's more AFL clubs [in Victoria] and more chance to be seen. You get recruiters going over to WA but you've always got AFL teams here and if they're not playing AFL you've got coaches watching you as well," Cockie said. "It keeps the AFL dream still alive, you've got to make changes to get to your goal again."

St Kilda coach Scott Watters coached Cockie for two seasons at Subiaco, including the 2008 WAFL flag. Watters wanted to get him into the VFL system, at least to the Saints feeder team, to show his true potential on the smaller VFL grounds.
