St Kilda coach Scott Watters says there's no excuses for Justin Koschitzke not to deliver as a key forward for the Saints this year.

Watters also had some encouraging news for Saints fans, telling Triple M’s Rush Hour Lenny Hayes has had a full pre-season and has improved by '5 per cent every time he has stepped out to play'.

Koschitzke, who booted 15 goals last year from 13 games (216 goals from 176 games in his career), is a 'key forward' and Watters mooted it’s unlikely the often-maligned tall will spend too much time in any other position this year.

"If you think you're going to reinvent him, that's not the way to go," Watters told The Rush Hour.

"He has to provide a contest. He's fit and had a really good pre-season and now he needs to deliver consistently."

Meanwhile, Watters stopped short of saying St Kilda will be a far more offensively-driven side in 2012 but did tell the boys 'if you're just a defensive side you're missing a massive offensive opportunity'.

And with the NAB Cup format making headlines, Watters backed the AFL's pre-season competition, saying that it serves a very important purpose; to play against opposition and prepare.
