Cult Heros
We don't currently have a true cult hero down at the saints and I was wondering who you think on our list is the next cult hero?
for me Shenton looks the most likely. The hairy little bloke who moves like he's on rails and likes the goals, just needs to play well and he's half way there.
From our past I can think of some examples from my era but you might want to add some more from other eras that you loved. They often have that big personality even when they are quiet guys that comes through on the field. usually have a show pony image or a point of difference and hated by other teams.
Currently Milne is the only one that probably falls into the Cult Hero status but from the past I would say:
Lockett the big boy looked like he spent too long at the fish and chip shop but pantsed teams on his own.
G train laconic bad boy with awesome mega mullet long past it's prime.
Burkey the nut bag in the hat was as hard as nails.
Barry Hall punch happy with a missing link image.
Everitt dumb as a dodo, looked like dick but had his charms.
Heatley someone cross bred Jason Dunstall with a chimp and came up with Heater.
Barker had his own disco in the clouds.
From others in my family I remember Douperouzel and Ditterich being big cult heros and Robbie Muir still polarises the people.

Re: Cult Heros
The Doc was maybe the biggest cult hero of them all.
You would have to add Nicky Winmar in there too,

Guys like the Doc & Harves were simply Heroes.borderbarry wrote:And dont forget Harvs.
To be a cult hero you really need to have something a bit wacky going on.
Think Mark Jackson, Warrick Capper, Darren Wheildon......

Re: Cult Heros
After seeing the training vision from the 2012 review by Watters, Shenton is def the new one for me. Crazy red Abe Lincoln beard and shaggy hair makes him stand out a mile away, Wilkes is pretty hard to miss also. They look like some American indy band or a pair of stoners from the old days.

Re: Cult Heroes
From recent teams, only Bakes Gardi and Milney, but then Milney is a pretty big one so others aren't missed.
From the new crew, who knows? Got a feeling that Ledger might turn out to be a bit of a character, maybe Marksworth too. These days anyone with longer than normal hair and/or facial hair is considered a 'character', hopefully the wheel will turn again and we'll have 'tashes, sidies and beards galore. Hopefully someone who's going bald will grow out a hairy halo à la Bruce Doull.
Til the others make themselves known, GO MILNEY!!

Re: Cult Heros
great thread. i agree with the OP and the doc. to be a cult hero you need something a bit wacky or unhinged going on or something that doesnt quite add up.
somone is is awesome but kind of the opposite to a james herd .
joffa cunningham was massive cult figure as was sarau and i remember when alex marcou even had a cult following at the saints .
recently gardi had a cult following when he had the gallop and the funy kick and the wild look in his eyes where u justy never knew what he was going to do next.
bakes and milney for sure. i personally have a cult for schneids so he qualifies in my book and gwilty probably not far off.
im hoping tom ledger is a real cult character. and then shenton looks like a different kind of cat.

There's always something a little different about these cult heroes. It may be their antics, it may be their look. I reckon we would have had one in Eljay Connors had he made the grade. Very weird looking skinny dude.

Re: Cult Heros
I am not sure if he qualifies but big Bob Jones was always a bit of a cult hero amongst my mates. I remember him doing a job on Kernahan one day at Moorabbin and the poor bloke could hardly lift his feet in the last qtr...was quite the site. Shame we missed out on his son!
Not sure if Craig O'Brien qualifies....but he alwats had something about him too.

Re: Cult Heros
I think Seb will be a future hero of the saints but he's too sensible to be a cult hero
Cam Shents is probably the only new guy that doesn't come with the "good character" tag so I'm hoping he has a bit of mongrel and a bit less orthodox.
Wilkes reminds me of Peter Hellier so I have a little trouble taking him seriously.

Re: Cult Heros
Great thread!!
Going back in the past.... Rocket Rod Owen was the first guy I recognised in the cult-hero category.
I can't remember who we were playing (might have been the Bears), but Rocket came out on 1 leg (his non-kicking leg) and bagged about 9 goals for the day at Moorabbin - all kicked with the wrong foot from memory.
I loved #27...

Re: Cult Heros
For me, a cult hero is a player who is an okay but not a great player, and one who gets a game occasionally and has a touch of the bizarre or unusual.
I was always a fan of Milan Faletic, Robbie Muir, and Doug Booth. (Muir was potentially a very good player, but certainly at times bizarre.)
Rex Hunt almost fits into this category, but was a pretty good player.

Re: Cult Heros
With the required discipline and adhearance to structures/gameplans there's not a good deal of space for cult heroes or characters in the game any more. Bizarre and indiscreet acts aren't tolerated any more - unfortunately.
I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.
