Free agency question

Post: # 1144385Post suss »

I know sod all about free agency but can anyone answer this question for me (in two parts): what is stopping, say Brendon Goddard, from going to GWS for no return to us, when he becomes eligible to move without restriction? And if the answer is 'nothing', then why wouldn't you trade him beforehand, so you can still get something for him?

I'm trying to work out why you wouldn't trade a player who:

A. is coming out of contract;
B. is able to move without restriction; and
C. carries considerable currency.

I Only know that
8 year player can move BUT any offer made by another club must be given right of rebuttal by original club
10 year player free to move- BUT surely there must be some compensation?

ok found simple guidelines-- although simple never stays simple for long
http://www.afl.com.au/tabid/208/default ... wsid=89809

for all options
His original club will receive a compensation pick for the loss of the player, on an AFL-determined formula.
