Said 'my playing group' a bit....apart from that, he didn't say much other than about the on field.

does it matter ? we now have the cattle that simply won't make the grade regardless of who steers the ship, we had it, now we don't, reality is bitch.
Bring it on you rose colored sunglass wearing fellow saint fans.
Apart from some ordinary umpiring we never looked like it, next year could be worse. :(
We can still enjoy our football but with a little less expectation.

Tks Sainter k.

Listening to that I get the feel very much unfinished business......especially the bit about hurting, and hating losing and being "unrelenting"....

On the flip side he also said the "end of an era" which is interesting....

it's heartening to see some realism.....we have missed the boat this time around...time to reload BUT we definitely need to make some changes....

I thought we "looked like it" in the 3rd.
I also felt we had the play at the start but were innefective going fwd.

IMHO everyone talks about our fwd line but for me our poor ball into fwd 50 where we rely solely on 2 or 3 good players by foot lets us down all the time.

We also "looked like it" in the last, there were a few passages of free flowing play that was reminiscent of a couple of years ago where we moved the ball skillfully and quickly...it was just a couple of minutes, check the replay you'll see what I'm talking about.
Anyway I love fishing :)

If a player like Shaw can continually carve us a new one, we simply aren't good enough. If Ross is now 0-2 against a first year coach in Longmire, we simply aren't good enough.

C'mon Firey, it's no secret we sucked tonight, but to talk us down for the future.

We'll be fine, mate.

Mark my words - we'll be giving it another crack next year.

End of an era all right.

2003-2011: the Saturday night Docklands streak - just finished last night.

THought it was a pretty honest assessment. ALso acknowledges the fact that he made some errors with Dempster and Jones up to half time.

He told it as it was. Made some wrong decisions re team selection, skills deplorable. He is hurting. Not interested in the fact we turned around a really poor start to the season. Anyone want to ask him again if we practice our foot skills!!!!

Reality has now definitely hit home. What we have been hiding for a long time as a team is now out in the open. Knowing what we need to do to correct it is one thing, getting the job done in a compromised draft is another.

I hope that the Club's first and best move is to retain the Coach for the long term - that's not a bad start. Getting good players is another.

The bloke here talking about 'skill differentials' - is he the same one who has overseen the arrival and selection of Jones, Polo, Dempster, Eddy, Geary, McQualter, Peake, Clarke, Gram etc?

For a bloke who summed up every post match press conference of 2007 with 'they butcher the ball' it seems pretty strange that he selects based on a plan where secondray importance seems to be placed on skills. I reckon it was a fair question from the floor. If the skill levels were not up to scratch in 2007 then why is the list at least as poor - if not poorer in that department?

I'm getting sick of hearing about what a great job he has done with the list he's been given. It's his list.

If RL is staying then I hope that Pelchan can bridge the divide between what is on our playing list and how the coach wants the game played. And the allocation of our salary cap allowance to players who have not or cannot in the future perform to the levels equivalent to what they take from the group.

bassoon wrote:Personally, I think that Lyon is a great coach.

Remember, when he took the helm, he had Gehrig and Hammil on their last legs, and a whole side that was injury prone.

Three Grand Finals, and playing the sort of footy with the list we have is an amazing effort.

Ross could have done two things at the end of 2007. He could have decided that we as a club needed to bottom out, and start all over again, with us starting to come good now, or risk everything, and give Rooey, Lenny, Dal, Milney, etc. a shot at winning the Premiership.

Just because a side bottoms out doesn't neccesarily mean that they'll win a Premiershiip in five years. The Doggies didn't manage it, the Dees still look a long way off, and Essendon, Richmond, and North haven't shown anything to suggest they'll be playing in the big one anytime soon.

As Ross said, its the end of an era. He knows that we need to completely rebuild, and I for one think he's the man for the job.

Expect pain next year, and possibly 2013, but I think we'll be having another serious tilt at the Flag sooner rather than later.

I can wait another three or four years. I've been waiting 45 years. What I don't want to see is that because of knee jerk reactions, we finish bottom four for a decade or so (which has been our history in the past).
Brilliantly said.

I'll be absolutely gutted if Ross is not re-signed.

I'm disgusted and astounded at the amount of criticism of Ross in the aftermath of last night.

People forget that we were written off in 07'; the premiership window had closed.

Incredible effort to be able to extract every ounce of effort out of this group. A group that has is far from the most talented - even in 09' we weren't the most talented 22.

Cool heads are needed. Great coaches do not grow on trees - there are only 3 other current head coaches that have coach their team to a Grand Final appearance, other than Ross.

Traditionally, the Saints have produced some stars but not star teams. Under Ross I've witnessed the team play as a team, and have been very proud to do so.

Let go of expectation. Get the boys fit, especially the skipper - clearly gutsing a f***ed leg. Embrace the longer break. Refresh, rejuvenate. Introduce who we can. Trust who we have. Supplement what we've got. Every club has this moment. Embrace it, because it'll be the beginning of the next wave.

"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'
