Injuries finally on top of us

Post: # 1123737Post bergholt »

If you believe the gastro story (I do) then we had 14 players this week unavailable for selection:

Hayes
Gwilt
Dawson
Koschitzke
Stanley
Siposs
Ledger
McQualter
Eddy
Cripps (named in Sandy reserves but not match fit yet)
Winmar
Crocker
Ferguson
Andreoli

This isn't an excuse for the loss but you'd have to suggest it's a reason. ACLs to two important players, a career-ending injury to our number one ruckman and long-term injuries to four promising kids have made it pretty tough all year, and today that seemed to be too much for the players out there.

We just haven't got so much depth that we can cope with losing a few good players, unfortunately. Maybe next year we'll be luckier - I hope so, because I can't see our depth improving overnight.

I think that says more about Sandy. Hayes and Gwilt have been missed. Kosi and Dawson have been avail for the majority of the season. The young players you mentioned had rare games and not at the same time. Did we ever have Siposs, Cripps and Ledger playing at the same time? Just two of them?

Side note: I reckon Crocker is the smokey in the bunch and doesn't get talked about as much as he should.

Considering Ross has said that we'll be pretty brutal with our list at the end of the year, our depth is likely to be less strong next year, as we won't have the likes of Gardiner, Baker, Blake (until recently) etc, running around in the VFL and ready to come in at a minutes notice.

yeah, but if gardiner or stanley or mcqualter were fit then we would have had more options to cover the gastro of kosi and dawson - hence my point about injuries and depth.

and if cripps, ledger or winmar were fit then we might have a better option for sub than blake or baker. i love both those guys, but they're not subs.

siposs and cripps played rounds 7, 8, 9. siposs and ledger played round 11. winmar also played rounds 9 and 10, and lynch also played round 10. had they not got injured then we would have seen more of them at afl level, but they were unavailable for selection.

he might be great one day, but at the moment he weighs barely 75 kg, and this year he played five games for sandy reserves and five games for sandy seniors between missing games with injury. he might have potential but signs are he's a way off fulfilling it.

He's had 5 years off; should just about be right to go!

May need a run at Sandy first though
