Who were the Saints "party boys" in the 70s?

I have often read that the Saints in the 1970s were the party boys.
You hear the players in the 80s and 90s often say 'well, it was different from when we were the party boys'.
However, you never actually hear much at all except people liked to go to the disco...

Who were the actual Saints players who used to like to be party boys? What did they get up to?
The idea of going to a disco at the club doesn't sound that outrageous

Not asking for any dirt, just a sense of what people are talking about.

Alot of them would be at the Saints Disco on Friday nights for sure. However, I think its only fair to point out, every club did in those days, not just us, different times.

Well here are just a few names for you Trevor Barker,Burns,Cunningham brothers,Georgy young (great marking ff)Saru
Duper,Sidebottom,Tweedale,Morris,Elliot brothers.
Carnt thing of to many more i was haveing to much of a good time myself.

Just about every one....and just about every VFL player.

I remember games where you would front the bar after homes games in the SC...and you would say if playing Blues have Maclure there, the Saints players ...and even the umpires!!!!!!!!!

What did they get up to?

In many ways pretty tame...just beer and women to excess....groupies in abundance....certaianly no pretence back then!!!!

Players were often still working...and the money earnt was not huge.

So later years with more time on their hands and more money saw the more extremes...at east from what I saw anyway.

They didn't call him "Wacko Jacko" for no reason.

Trevor Barker said he got into his car in the Moorabbin car park to discover somebody had put a brick under his break pedal. He went on to saying there were no prizes for guessing who the culprit was.

Plugger turned up one pre-season with the blond tips in his hair, 80s style. Must have been taking the lead from the other blonds, Barks and Roberts.

Barks was one of the pre-eminent party boys, a champion on and off the field ... particularly a favourite of the ladies.

I minded Frankie Coghlan's bag one night while he went to the bar.

For a couple of minutes I was approached by attractive young women. Yet in the hours before and the hours after the bag minding duties - nothing.

wow, to think that the ladies were drawn by the permeation of pheramones which came from skeeter's footy shorts which were concealed inside of his sports bag. maybe if you had have dusted yourself with them, you could have been a chick magnet for the entire night.

One game agaisnt Carlton I attended with the St Kilda Club Dentist (of the day).
About 10 minutes into the last quarter there was a PA announcement for the 'St Kilda Club Dentist to come to the rooms'.

He got up and was away for about 20 minutes.
WHen he came back to our seats to pick up his stuff I asked him what had happened.
His reply:-
Maclure had chipped his front tooth and he needed it fixed because he had a date that night!
He then left and took Maclure to his surgery where the chipped tooth was repaired.

Granted that Carlton were well on top (as ususal) but to think a player would leave the game to get his tooth fixed!!

A game against Essendon when Van Der Haar was playing in the twos.

Found him propped up at the downstairs bar after the main match talking gibberish.

Later on, maybe about 6:30, the senior Essendon team walk in and head straight to the bar to buy travellers for the bus trip home to Windy Hill.

I was a bouncer at the st.kilda disco years ago. I saw Plugger drop Molley, and Jackson light a peice of twisted paper and put in 1 players shorts, and light it. Alot of other stuff happenned that should never be said.

The real partying went on later at night in an old change room under the main grandstand.

Like Hernando’s Hideaway it was not that easy to gain admittance. But it was well worth it on the occasions I managed to talk my way in. Plenty of booze was consumed away from the prying eyes of the Saints Disco patrons.

I took a Bombers supporting mate there one Saturday night and hours later found him locked inside a sauna. Wow Jones had been the culprit. My mate didn’t find it particularly funny but I still have a laugh when I think about it.

And of course there were the Pleasant Sunday Mornings and the Strip Nights, all in the name of raising money for the end of year trip of course.

But don’t get me started on them. Particularly the latter, as it only rekindles memories of Alan Sidebottom that I would rather forget
