Would love to see Beej unload for a monster goal again, like this one

Are we silencing brilliance?

Alves said winmar was so special, he let him play his own game to some degree.

I believe Goddard, if let lose, can be the best player in the competition, and to some degree we are boxing.
The siren rang and I turned my head thinking he wasn't going to do anything with the ball. Suddenly, I heard gasps of disbelief and I immediately looked to see what was going on. I saw the ball in the last 5-10 metres of its flight and thought to myself "Holy cow!".

Why not let him try cut loose now and then

I'd like to see BJ do our kick ins.
He has the accuracy to pick out short targets to run the ball out.

Then if the opposition have shut down all the short options BJ should make an agreed signal and unleash one of those 70m monsters to an agreed location for our mids to run on to.

Would give us extra flexibility.

I like the sound of this 70m monster strategy. However, it would have to be rehearsed ad nauseum in traning and could only really be used like a hail mary in American Football. Use only when it's a last roll of the dice.

It's a shame he can't be in three places at the same time - backline, the middle and the forwardline.

It was at the end of the third quarter, he was about 60 metres out, and it hit the post one metre from the bottom on the thick padding. It did not spin well through the air. Nothing special at all, certainly not a Jeff Fehring.

bj kicked a barrel against Freo a few years back when we were getting flogged at Subi.

From about 60 metres, had the s.hits and just torped it. Went through at post height and I can still remember the reaction from the freo crowd.

EVERYONE loves a big barrel.

When Goddard kicked the bomb on half time I turned to the guy in the next seat without a thought and said "maybe he should play a bit more on instinct all the time"

The pressure the guy puts himself under feels so immense that you just wonder what he can do with a bit of mind freedom!

His torps would be one way of getting over the press.

I've read prevoiusly that BJ has asked the defensive coaches if he can kick a torp from full back and they all say no.

Defensive coaches won't give it the green light because the torp is the least reliable kick. Yet in the situation where there is just seconds left on the clock and we're a goal (or less) behind, I reckon this sort of strategy could be a goer.

Like the Quarterback in American Football, you're going for broke with a "hail mary" pass and you'll want him to pinpoint one of your quickest players - ala the Wide Receiver - and take ball all the way down field for the 6 points.

Of course this play needs to be set up. I think creating a diversion with all our talls (the obvious targets to mark the ball) converging into one area, could create the possibilty of la oose player with the wheels or Wide Receiver, if you will, to execute.

thats because so few can control it.

Winmar probably is as accurate with the torp as any in the history of the game.

I'd say goddard has enough talent to be as good.

Doug Wade kicked more than 1000 VFL goals kicking torps. If you can kick them, why not?

Mind you, if you proved that your torpedo was as accurate as your drop punt, they may make an exception to this rule.

However, a lot has changed since the days of Wade. Kids are taught only to kick the drop punt today, are they not? Even when I was growing up in the 80's and 90's, my footy coaches encouraged us to kick the drop punt. I guess having a specialist player to kick the torp would be like a baseball team having a knuckleball pitcher.

I think Goddard with his marking ability, height, and natural strength, is a natural CHF tbh.

Player Reiwoldt at FF in the arc and goddard at CHF....every time he gets the ball its either a goal or a chest pass to roo....
