Riewoldt as a utility

Post: # 1071704Post hungry for a premiership »

Due to Roo's innacurate goal kicking, how would people feel about using him as a winger/midfielder/backman. I'm thinking you could virtually swap his role with that of Goddard.

Thoughts?

Not a bad idea, but a better solution would be to throw the world at Jack, even though he is contracted.

When Gehrig was with us teams could not triple team Roo cause G would cut them up instead if they did.
Wonder how many teams would triple team Roo if Jack was down there at FF waiting for the ball from half forward

We had a free at him in the draft and passed over him. The St.Kilda way when it comes to drafting.

Not sure about him being in the backline, but certainly his run gets him that crucial kick into the 50 or to the top of the 50. Quite a few times tonight he took a mark and was directly responsible (even if he didn't kick it himself) for the next pass inside 50 to goal. His inaccuracy in front of goal may improve somewhat, but for the time being he is making himself very useful further up the ground. Opposition players don't have to tank to go with him, and when he's taking marks around the centre of the ground they don't have the desire to stop him.

Half the time I wonder if Roo knows. By the time he's run all over the ground, then sprinted his guts out to take a mark somewhere near the 45mtr mark of the goal, he's too rooted to kick it with any accuracy. Or whatever else causes him to shank the goal. Perhaps he does far too much? Perhaps the expectation on him his just plain ridiculous? Give the captaincy to Goddard, let Roo concentrate playing the game.

True, he was all over the ground tonight, and his exhaustion due to his gut running was a contributing factor for his innacurate goal kicking. Brereton and Hudson discussed this after the game.

So which is he, a forward or a winger? If he's going to be a winger, then bring in another forward.

Up field he had direct input into a number of our scoring attacks tonight - id absolutely use his strength which is his aerobic capacity to blow up oppponents.

He looks like he needs a spell from the goals to be honest and who knows....drifting fwd instead of being the stay home fwd may free him up even more. I also reckon Kosi looks more at home in space down fwd without Riewoldt next to him.

Is this a guy who has kicked 450 goals and led the comp in contested marks and lead up marks for years...

Really needs to kick goals...at least while he does have the F in his title.

So where was his greatest input into the goals tonight?

IMO when he was centre wing/upfield heading towards fwd 50.

let him roam. His man cant go with him.

Kosi also looked good with a bit of freedom into the ruck.
