Would we be better off with our own Reserves side ?

Post: # 1053875Post howlinwolf »

I'm not sure if this has been covered before ? Apologies if it has.

The subject of AFL sides having their own reserves sides instead of affiliations came up this morning on SEN.

Would our own reserves side be an advantage to us rather than our
affiliation with Sandringham ?
Of course this would cost a lot more money but considering our member base now it might be feasible ?

It would have to be a better proposition for us in nurturing our young players. Especially in the way we expect them to play Saints Footy.
There would be no conflict of interest as there was recently with Casey Scorpions and Melbourne regarding Casey playing Fevola.

The affiliated VFL clubs have some advantages playing AFL listed players
but also there must be disadvantages as these players come and go
more often causing inconsistencies in their team list.

I would prefer to see us have our own VFL side.
Any thoughts ?

A couple of issues as I see it

The cost is a huge issue. Would that money be better spent on extra coaching outside match day and better facilities... hell a chartered plane was seen as a boon last year.

Other issues include whether the VFL is allowing more sides into the comp and where te team would play? Moorabin?

From what I understand, the club/clubs already contribute a significant amount to be affiliate.

The difference in quality would be amazing.

Players play in the positions the clubs wants them to. IE Midfield spots are not taken up by VFL listed players, nor with forward, back or ruck spots.

More/All players play in the seniors and thus a better comptetion.

The players have the potential to play the same game plan as the seniors allowing better transition and learning of team structures.

Full control of player development.

(And they would wear the colours!)

That's the advantage collingwood have probably got. Knowing game plans and such and playing the positions they probably play if they were selected in the 1st team.

Yep Geelong, Collingwood and maybe the Swans field their own side in a NSW comp

I would be all for a stand alone Saints reserves

Cost would be the main issue.

Plus, where do we play? Moorabbin? Is it still at a VFL standard?

Extra coaches, player services, medical & transport.

But you have absolute control.

Yes we should but money is an issue. They would need a grant to get Moorabbin back to VFL standard and as others have suggested probably 4 or 5 extra staff plus paying the extra players.

i believe it to be a massive advantage - for reasons already stated. Again, the AFL in allowing some teams to field 'reserve' teams gives them an advantageous over others.
The AFl makes more than enough money to subsidise teams to allow them to play in the vfl. The interstate teams could do the same in their domestic leagues - be interesting to think how much better port would have been if it was allowed in the past to play its seniors exclusively in the port magpies sanfl team. might have also blunted centrals long lasting dominance.
personally i'd prefer the reserves comp returning - but this would be extra costly for clubs with all the interstate games.

They often say it's the 1% extra in things that gives you the edge to win
a flag.
I wonder if it is that slight percentage better for player development with
our own reserves side ?
Collingwood seems to have have gained senior quality players from
some that I thought weren't going to make it.

It would be disappointing if it were an advantage but we couldn't afford it.

No doubt would it would be a better option for the club. The few Sandy games I saw last year they had Lynch playing across half back most of the time, where as we want him to play he lead up third tall forward roll.

I also think it would help with recuriting mature age players, much like Geelong did with Pods.

A shame it boils down to a money issue
One would think it definitely helped the Pies bring on those young blokes rapidly
