Could we manage without Gilbert?

H-S discusses Gilbert as a potential GWS target.
Considering the talent we saw in the ranks on Friday - would we miss him?

Yes
He fits into that Goddard mould.
Perfect shape.
Quick.
Good mark.
Good decision maker.
Can play anywhere.
Just needs better execution and leadership.
In short - keep him at all costs.

The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.

FTR I agree with the consensus. Perhaps this article along with the Fev news has got me thinking. What if - hypothetically - Gilbert turns out not just to be a silly boy (considering last year's indiscretions), but an A-grade clown?plugger66 wrote:Not sure what i saw Friday that will help us win a flag in the 2-3 years left before the window shuts. Keep him if we can.
More hypotheticals: Gilbert plays in the forward line this year. Walsh / Simpkin / Johnson get used to AFL level footy in the backline. Next year - Walsh up forward, Simpkin or Johnson cement the rebounding defender role.

Another hypothetical. Gilbert is a good bloke who did an immature thing. Players are big enough to accept that.InkerSaint wrote:FTR I agree with the consensus. Plays forward this year and does very well. Walsh/Simpkin and Johnson do as I expect them to do and play a total of 15 games between them and still need another year or two to get to the next level.
I reckon the hypothetical i have mentioned is more likely than the one you mentioned.

I notice you had nothing to say about what I said about your pathetic quiting of the forum in March last year. Still the funniest thing seen on this site when a 60 year old quits because someone else posted something he normally does. Hilarious.perfectionist wrote:Not even Robert Eddy's game?plugger66 wrote:Not sure what i saw Friday that will help us win a flag in the 2-3 years left before the window shuts...

Your hypothetical is not mutually exclusive with mine. Except that one of your premises is flawed. Gilbert has exercised poor judgment on more than one occasion. Unfortunately two or three of those occasions snowballed.plugger66 wrote:Another hypothetical. Gilbert is a good bloke who did an immature thing. Players are big enough to accept that.

I'm still flabbergasted that Gilbert is being targeted by some supporters as some sort of a cancer in the club.InkerSaint wrote:Your hypothetical is not mutually exclusive with mine. How is becoming involved with a girl who tells you that she is 19 an issue?
How does ending the relationship when you find out that she is 16 be interpreted as anything but doing the right thing?
As far as I'm concerned Sam made a stupid error in not deleting the photos immediately after he took them. Anyone who has recently been on an end of season boys trip away would know that it's a reasonable chance that a teammate will make a goose of himself & a photo will be taken.
Since then I'm not sure how else he has added to the ongoing saga.
He's a very good player who was one of the handful to give the filth trouble in both GF's. How anyone could consider that he is expendable is beyond me.

Wow, cancer, that's a strong word, and I thought I made it clear I was talking about hypotheticals?
Let's forget I played the "Fev" angle, and talk about the (real) possibility that Gilbert is a) out of contract, b) a target for GWS, and c) tempted by the money?

Yes. He is a mobile and agile 194cm player with pace who marks very well, and who also reads the play well.InkerSaint wrote:

That makes him a rare commodity.
Now we have quite a few promising youngsters.....but only Tommy may approach Gilbert's mix of talent.
Flying the World in comfort thanks to FF Points....
Kind of off topic, but does anyone know why Gilbo wasn't sitting with the other players who weren't playing Friday night (Roo, Hayes, Kosi, Ray, Jones) ?GrumpyOne wrote:He's gone.

By mutual agreement.
Forget about the "We're all professionals" talk by Roo.
Roo wants him gone and he will be.
Maybe there is a fracture..
i heard he had a slight hammy.#1GILL wrote:Kind of off topic, but does anyone know why Gilbo wasn't sitting with the other players who weren't playing Friday night (Roo, Hayes, Kosi, Ray, Jones) ?GrumpyOne wrote:He's gone.
