Costello's ignorant and deceitful attack

Post: # 1040232Post perfectionist »

In his "opinion" piece on today's Age:

"... Footballers are being asked to attend disaster relief centres and hospital wards and charity events so they can use their celebrity to endorse good works. Recently, we learnt of a sad example of how this can backfire. Some St Kilda footballers were asked to visit a local high school to motivate the students. One of the girls alleged that she later became pregnant to one of them. Claiming to have lost the baby, she said she felt let down by the club and began releasing embarrassing photographs of the players.

Footballers are not chosen for their moral principles. They do not go into a national draft for budding philanthropists. They can run and catch and kick a ball. What are the clubs thinking when they send them to schools to give guidance on life skills? Any right-thinking parent would quake with fear to hear that footballers were coming to their daughter's school to give a little bit of inspiration..."

He deceitfully links the school visit to subsequent events. He is quite ignorant of the value of the community work that footballers (and other sportspeople) do. Then again, such things would be a waste of time to someone like him. A man who knows the cost of everything but the value of nothing.

Not agreeing with Costello

BUT

where was the other players and AFLPA scorn of the media and radio (especially Hinch) when they were saying it against saints players (should not be involved in programs)

now that it is referred to afl players they are up in arms

ok when it was just saints players

also in the poll on HS running 50% so not just his concern but so many are just brainwashed by the media circus and the type of headlines in his era of beat ups

He's a politician. Isn't lies, deception, and misleading the public his stock-in-trade?

what about Lubo- dishing out on AFL ( and saints) after he slammed the A League and Victory last week- or was it heart he slammed.

And the way you treat women with utter disrespect is a disgrace. St Kilda have been my team since I was a little kid. ... I no longer support them because of the way they've carried on.

For them it will always be three-quarter-time, with the scores level

That is a very funny photo.

I think the clear message coming from the Twitter responses by players on this issue, is that AFL footballers can't spell.

Brendon Goddard invites Peter Costello to attend school clinic

Matt Windley From: Herald Sun February 16, 2011 4:05PM

ST KILDA star Brendon Goddard has issued a personal invitation to former deputy Prime Minister Peter Costello to attend school football clinics run by AFL players.

Costello this morning said parents should fear AFL-run school clinics because footballers were not qualified to be teaching life skills and were only involved with charity work to strengthen their club's brands.

But Goddard hit back at the claims this afternoon, saying such clinics were mutually beneficial.

"He’s entitled to his opinion, but I don’t particularly agree with it,’’ Goddard said.

"I guess now being a more experienced player … you actually do know the influence that you have over kids and you can actually change kids' lives and the way they look at certain things.

"We used to talk about the consequences of your choices and we know, as players, now that we can actually make an impact on kids' lives and peoples lives and we actually enjoy doing that.

"It enhances your social skills and people skills dealing with kids of different personalities and different ages.’’

Goddard said the invitation to Costello to attend such clinics was open.

"I think that he should take responsibility and maybe come out to a school clinic,’’ he said.

"I’m inviting him the next time that we do go and see the influence that we have on kids and we actually enjoy doing it, we have a good time with it.’’

aflpa Finally say what hasn't been printed
But Hart said the Saints' drama was not relevant to any debate around school visits.

“To have a cheap shot about the St Kilda situation, when the facts of that matter [are] the players didn’t meet the young woman in question at that camp, is pretty rough," he said.

“I don’t think there’s any evidence of any bad behaviour at community clinics, so we’re disappointed that there’s an implication there has been."

"Challenge to Costello

ST KILDA star Brendon Goddard has thrown down the challenge to former federal treasurer Peter Costello to join him on the next football clinic he attends.

Goddard's public invitation came after Costello wrote a newspaper column claiming clubs and players only attended school clinics because they were "working on the brand".

The Saints utility said school visits were beneficial to both players and their young fans and he urged the former deputy Liberal leader to observe it for himself.

"He should take responsibility and come out to a school clinic," Goddard said on Wednesday afternoon.

"I'm inviting him to come next time we have one and actually see the influence we have on kids and how much we enjoy doing it.

"When you're younger you can be a little bit naïve but now (as a senior player) you actually do know the influence you have over kids and you can actually change kids lives and the way they look at certain things."

He said the school visits were a help to players who may be naturally shy when speaking in front of strangers.

"It enhances your social skills and people skills, dealing with kids of all different personalities as well and different ages. We deal with preps up to year 11 and 12," he said.
