History of St Kilda

...the archipelago ...not the club. Feel free to move this to another part of the forum.

Found this fascinating, and I know I've seen posts in the past about the origins of the name of St Kilda. The area was named after a ship called the Lady of St Kilda that was moored in the bay for quite some time.

The links include stories of how some of the islanders moved to Australia in the 1800's, but half died on their way to Port Philip Bay. And when the survivors got to Melbourne they had a hard time because they only spoke Gaelic.

If St Kilda Football Club has had a hard time over the years, the original islanders had it harder!

Sunday is the 80th anniversary of the evacuation of the islands, and is now known as St Kilda Day. Hope it is a good omen.

I still think the Team should do a preseason camp over there and some work with the heritage trust

I recently bought a CD of songs based around St Kilda and it's story.

which has a couple of Australian song about St Kilda included.

Good call Saintbrat. Imagine running up those hills.

Looks a beautiful place in summer, but winter would be a whole other story....!

Absolutely stunning. Perhaps if we can't get a better stadium deal we should play at our TRUE home  ?
