If we could have back one member of our 2004 squad (who is no longer playing), in their 2004 form - who would it be?

A lot of star players to pick from; Harvey, Hamill, Hudghton etc... but I reckon Gehrig might slot in pretty well right now.

Lance or James??

1. Harvey
2. Ball
3. Hammil
4. Gehrig
5. Max
6. Powell

Harvey because he is an all time great.
Ball because he was in 2004 a rolls Royce version of Burke
Hammil because he would add spine to our forward line and epitomizes lyon's philosophy of forward pressure.
Gehrig because he would be the finisher, though not sure he would succeed under the Lyon game plane.
max because he would play great team football.
Powell because he protected the midfielders like a big brother.

Heath Black

Our current squads foot skills are putrid. Black's kicking and run and carry would do wonders for our side.

We need midfielders...who can kick.

Eddy,Geary,McQualter,Jones,etc,etc

heath black was good, but not in our top 5 midfielders who were:

Harvey, ball, hayes, dal santo, Powell.

Probably ahead of montagna.

Dal Santo and Hayes still play for us...
Powell was a slow plodder back then ,handy but still slow and a plodder.
Ball-Slow...can't kick
Harv's- well he wasn't at his best in 04,but still more valuable than Black I'll concede.
We're really crying out for a Heath Black type atm though...not a superstar, but quality ball user with good leg speed

watch 04 again.

Powell stood up and cannoned into players, was a human battering ram.

Also used to scout for harvey, dal santo, ball, etc, watch how taggers used to 'run into' powells shoulder.

The strat is now used by carlton and collingwood.

the runner runs through the back of the back and powell would take a backward step cleaning up the tagger who ran straight into powell.

Also he would run straight at bounce ups and clean up 'accidently' who ever was on ball/harvey

Guerra was a poor mans powell.

people watch the stats too much.

in 04, ball wasn't a plodder, he was fantastic.

Unfortunatly human battering rams aren't looked upon kindly 6 years down the track. In this day he probably would of copped 4 weeks suspension for his spray on Ling in the Wizard cup!

And Geelong.

Has been a bug bear of mine when supporters have bagged Dal when he is heavily tagged. Like Carazzo this year. Maybe Costs someone a week but would send a message to other taggers in the comp. Look what Clint goes through against the better teams

yeah probably.

though his hits were generally quite clever.

the way he used to make people run into him at bounce ups often resulted a free kick to him, if we didn't have the ball regardless.

Loved powells work.

he was also a very tough inside player.

aye thommo and burke copped a lot of abuse in the latter part of their careers but were absolute guns at their peak.

THommo was also captaincy material I thought.

great on field leader.

Interesting you mention the Pies above. I see many similarities between Pies 2010 and Saints 2004. They do have a much better defensive strategy than we did but I noticed weeks ago that they were running ahead of the ball and I believe that was why we started to lose games in 04
