Round 7, 1994 vs Swans on 7two, Friday night 1.30am

Post: # 910868Post remboy »

From memory this is the Peter Caven game. Those old enough to remember won't need to be told any more. For those who haven't seen this game, or weren't privelaged to see Plugger in full flight do whatever is required to catch this game.
This is the perfect opportunity to the great man at his intimidating, brutal, sensational best. The expression 'won the game off his own boot' never applied to a player or game more than this. We had one player win his position on the day and that was enough.
Happy viewing!

What about the 12 he licked against the scum at Moorabbin?

Amazing last quarter. The ancient Swannies fans behind the goal at
the city end couldn't believe what was happening. Peter Caven...ouch!
Hard to believe the Swans fans laid out the red carpet for Plugger just
a few years later.

It happens. I remember the Saints fans booing Fraser Gehrig in a game where we drew with the Eagles at Colonial and then he became a cult hero at the Saints.

It wasn't just a few years later - it was a few months later. Trade done after the 1994 season. It was that game by Lockett that prompted the Swans to chase him.

And I should add....I was at the game.

It was just fantastic to come back from so far down in the last quarter.

We were 38 points down at 3 quarter time.

We were 48 points down at the 7 minute mark of the last quarter.

We won by a point.

Enjoy the replay.

And that was after we kicked the last two of the third quarter.

Amazing comeback wasn't it. Might tape it. I never get sick of those games.

incident here at 1 minute 15, slow mo at 1:30ish.... big hit!

wasn't it then Caven who went on tv and absolutely smashed an effigy of Tony Lockett with a baseball bat in fit of scripted rage that got out of hand? (or am I thinking of something else??)

I was there too!

One of my fondest footy memories.

Nothing to be celebrated about the Caven incident tho...

"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'

the big fella woulda turned out like carl williams if he hadn't turned out to be a legendary goal kicker. as would carey and ablett, for that matter.

he barely played a game that season. missed nine after this incident, and had already missed four at that point. here's his stats for this game:

20 possessions - 17 kicks, 3 handballs
12 marks
1 free for, 7 frees against
11 goals, 2 behinds
2 brownlow medal votes

kicked 11 and couldn't get the three votes! paul kelly picked them up - he's about as far from lockett as they come.

but more impressive is that he gave away seven frees and still got the two votes. no bias shown from the umps there...
