If so, who do we need?

Reading through the 2010 Club Lists i'd say we have only 4 Rookie picks left ...

The list changes for 2025 have begun, always an interesting time for an avid supporter.

No we don't, we have a full list.

Only way to get one is to delist someone else

At this point in time there are only 4 picks in the Pre-Season Draft.
These 4 clubs passed at the National Draft

1. Melbourne = Joel MacDonald
2. Richmond = Unknown
3. Fremantle = Adam McPhee
4. Sydney = Daniel Bradshaw

Other clubs can create vacancies to enter the Pre-Season Draft at List lodgement No3 due 2PM this Wedneday.

Delistings would be the normal action to create a vacancy but St Kilda could move Steve Baker to veteran outside the list of 38.
That would create a senior vacancy at the expense of a rookie vacancy and remove the option of a Nominated Rookie available for senior selection.

The other impediment to having a pick at the Pre Season Draft is that clubs must also submit an estimate of Total Player Payments this Wednesday.
If there is insufficient room under the salary cap clubs get excluded.

The advantage to creating a Pre Season Draft vacancy is that the clubs get to pick a player ahead of the rookie draft.

For instance if St Kilda were to create a vacancy by moving Baker outside the list of 38, St Kilda may get pick No 5 in the Pre Season Draft.

The player picked would get payed AFL minimum pay - $49,400.
That would count against the salary cap whereas a rookie $34,300 would not.

But St Kilda would get to review the entire list of players available and after Richmond and pick the best available.
There is always a guy or two that got overlooked in the National Draft.

The alternative is that the club gets to exercise rookie pick No 68 instead. (Rookie pick 52 if they pre-select David Moran).

It comes down to:
1. financial cost - $49,400 versus $34,300 for a rookie
2. salary cap $49,400 versus $0 for a rookie
3. lost of option to make a rookie into a Nominated Rookie eligible for senior selection (50% of the Nominated Rookie's pay then counts against the salary cap).

I love your posts on these issues Ace, There are so many rules and they are never really addressed so it's good to have it spelled out for you

Will be interesting to see what the club does, I would have thought that we'd have 100k spare in the cap, do they really run them that tight?

100k would allow us to pick up a young player (such as Grimes or Panos) aswell as leaving us with enough money spare just incase a rookie needs promoted during the season...

+1

It's good to have these things spelt out & I like your thinking on what to do with an extra $100K, seems there were a few surprises in terms of kids overlooked so we may as well get in there before the draft world (as we know it) comes to an end.

It's great to know Ace that someone understands the rules.
Like to look over the scums books to see if they are in breach of salary cap due to that ex St.Kilda player?

Except for the sanity nothing much has been lost.
