As promised, the best Saints from Ballarat. As with the previous criteria, each has been chosen as close to the position they actually played. Some real gems here! This can run its course for a week or so then I will finalise after feedback. The only possible challenges might come from some recent players, who may have spent time at Ballarat before joining the TAC etc, or recycleds who started out somewhere near the banks of Lake Wendouree.
This one was fun to put together, and ah, that centreline actually hit the paddock in that exact arrangement a number of times.
By my estimates there are no current playing Ballarat Saints, so I guess it will be a happy day for the faithful when we continue our historical connection to this fantastic footballing city!
Apologies to Sebastopolians and perhaps a couple of players from Beaufort (Gary Lofts and Dean Chiron from memory) but this is strictly a Ballarat line up!

As for Scott, Malthouse et al above, great work, theyll all make hot competition for what should be a brilliant team. Keep them coming, I thought Id fine toothed this beast but great to hear of some of these that I have missed as they were fine players. There will be some final selection controversies, no doubt.
John 'swooper' Northey could go in as coach. Coached Redan to a number of flags and then went on to coach (and play) the Saints Reserves.
Phillip Walsh also came from Redan about the same time as Northey in the early 80's.
Gerard Cahir and Malcolm Scott might have tried out as well, not sure if they cracked it in the big time though.

You can break the news to Swooper - he's still as feisty as ever. I hear he finally realised that umpires can pay free kicks for umpire abuse from the boundary!
I also hear the Graeme Gellie is doing well in Colac running a fitness centre. He's still in good shape apart from the knee that cut short his career with the Saints.

You're a bit rough on the Sebastapolians - but if they've had Dwayne Russell as a coach who can blame you Elvis and no need to apologise! I remember one year they had GF T-shirts printed up before the game and lost.
As a best and fairest winner Gellie should go straight into the side as the RR. Packham was only 5'2" so more of a rover than ruck rover.
Northey has a far superior coaching record to Gellie - he in fact coached him at Redan where they won from memory 4 flags in a row back in the 70's.
Robbie Muir was playing back at East Ballarat in 1981 - did he go back to the Saints after that Elvis?

You're on fire Crowjelly. The only major issue for Swooper is that he didn't coach the Seniors at St.Kilda..but he did coach the seconds, so maybe we can sneak him in the final line up as an advisor to Graham Gellie. Yes, the great, wonderfully talented but often terrifying Robbie Muir came back in 84 but for only two games. Sadly he only played 20 games between 77 and 84. A couple of others unearthed for consideration. Surely Lindsay Fox will make the cut in this team in some capacity or another. His contribution to the Saints as President and in other ways has been enormous, so even if he doesn't slip in as a player, then maybe he'll go alongside (but above) Blake as honorary el presidente of the Ballarats (he played at Golden Point for a season on Killa's (strong) suggestion. I don't think the thread has picked up Tony Evans yet either (27 games, from East Ballarat, 86 - 88).
This will be a mighty side. I consider all thread contributors as fellow selectors so keep the suggestions coming.

JEFF DUNNE (back pocket, #''s 48, 8): Solid, reliable and amongst the first picked in this squad. The original back pocket specialist.
DAN FEEHAN (half back flank): Played in a number of positions but was at his best down back. Former Vice Captain at Sth Ballarat.
VAL PEROVIC (centre half back, #'s 32, 25, 9): Another who moved on after the 'shift to Melbourne' edict. The faithful were horrified to see him go. A fantastic footballer.
RUSSELL TWEEDDALE (half back flank, #23): Controversial ahead of Malthouse here, but 'Bucket' was and is a true Sainter through and through. A hard nut and when compared to the sort of football played by Malthouse at the Saints in this position, Tweeddale wins but only just by a curly red hair.
GEOFF CUNNINGHAM (wing, #"s 25, 5): Legend. Out and out champion.
GREG BURNS (centre, #'s 30, 11): The Sultan of Snake Valley. Another absolute legend.
MAURICE O'KEEFE (wing, #15): Pushed Darryl Cunningham to the bench in this line up. Fell out of favour when the Ballarats were told to move to Melbourne.
ROBERT MUIR (half forward flank, #'s 40, 32): Wonderfully talented but at times terrifying. Absolute tragedy that he played only 20 games from 1977 to 1984.
[BRIAN GLEESON (centre half forward, # 30): One of the most decorated in this lineup, honours included a Best and Fairest and a Brownlow. Spent time in the ruck but was very mobile and spent a lot of time in this position. Career cut tragically short by a knee injury.
b]GEORGE MORRISEY[/b] (half forward flank, #'s 1, 30): Perhaps unfiarly best remembered for spraying a shot at goal that could have landed us our first premiership, but make no mistake Morrisey was a gun and Captain in 1912.
CHARLES BAKER (forward pocket): Champion all rounder who also played cricket for Victoria. Kicked 30 goals in 1902, which is relatively unremarkable until closer inspection that reveals the Saints of that season only scored a grand total of 64 goals for the whole year.
TONY LOCKETT (full forward, #'s 37, 14, 4): He was just very, very, very good. The thrown crutches, suspensions, the mullet... never a dull moment with Plugger. One of our best.... ever.
GRAEME GELLIE (forward pocket, # 24): His first twenty games were sublime before injury. If you thought Diesel Williams had a good handball ask around, Graeme Gellie could cut a team up with quick inside hands just as easily as a looping, perfectly timed handball bomb. Good enough to keep others on the bench.
PETER KIEL (ruck rover, #17): Best and Fairest in his first year in 1982. Defensive on-baller who could rack up possessions. Great player.
PAUL DODD (rover, #6): A hard task master and incredibly talented. Another cruelled by injury.
BRIAN MOLONEY (ruck, #2). Edges out Gleeson (as a true ruckman) and Sutherland in the middle. Gave three seasons solid service in the ruck.
DARRYL CUNNINGHAM (interchange, #26): Didn't mind a blue but indeed he could play.
MICHAEL MALTHOUSE (interchange, #'s, 44, 37, 32, 22): More numbers than a telephone book perhaps suggests how he never quite settled at Moorabbin before Yabby moved him on.
IAN BAKER (interchange, #20): Had some toe but another hammered by injuries. We never saw the best of him.

TONY LOCKETT (full forward, #'s 37, 14, 4): He was just very, very, very good. The thrown crutches, suspensions, the mullet... never a dull moment with Plugger. One of our best.... ever.
GRAEME GELLIE (forward pocket, # 24): His first twenty games were sublime before injury. If you thought Diesel Williams had a good handball ask around, Graeme Gellie could cut a team up with quick inside hands just as easily as a looping, perfectly timed handball bomb. Good enough to keep others on the bench.
PETER KIEL (ruck rover, #17): Best and Fairest in his first year in 1982. Defensive on-baller who could rack up possessions. Great player.
PAUL DODD (rover, #6): A hard task master and incredibly talented. Another cruelled by injury.
BRIAN MOLONEY (ruck, #2). Edges out Gleeson (as a true ruckman) and Sutherland in the middle. Gave three seasons solid service in the ruck.
DARRYL CUNNINGHAM (interchange, #26): Didn't mind a blue but indeed he could play.
MICHAEL MALTHOUSE (interchange, #'s, 44, 37, 32, 22): More numbers than a telephone book perhaps suggests how he never quite settled at Moorabbin before Yabby moved him on.
IAN BAKER (interchange, #20): Had some toe but another hammered by injuries. We never saw the best of him.
JAMIE LAMB (interchange, #'s 51, 17): A solid toiler, best of the following...

PRESIDENT: Lindsay Fox: Many would scoff at this as the Fox administration was responsible for laying down the law to the Ballarat Saints, insisting that road trips were out and full time residence in Melbourne was in. The great irony here was that in his playing days Killa sent LF to Golden Point for a season to sharpen up! make of that what you will!
