OK, let's try this one... Along with our boom recruiting, we also traded a few stars in our time. So I've had a crack at a team of players we let go over the years.

unfortunately he played 7 games for melbourne after being pretty much a champion at st kilda. 184cm! i remember him a bit taller than that.

David Grant was the best 'small' defender ever.

He was always in the top 10 for marks in the league, he just put his body in between hammers all the time, this is in an era before 'chippilotto' football.

Loewe was first, plugger was usually about 3rd or 4th and grant was usually between 9th and 11th.

in 1991 the clocking of grant and burke opened up our defence like floodgate by ablett.

IMO at the time burke was a bit player in our team, an up and commer, his loss in 91 was nothing compared to the loss of david grant in our back line, but nothing more, Grant was an absolute champion defender. Think marking like fisher, poise like reiwoldt, courage like Nathan Burke and genuine pace to get to the contest.

sadly like many other players off courage, he was finished as a player by 29/30. His body just couldn't take it any more, and football was much more brutal to geniune good guys with courage in the 90s than now. Every mark he took was followed up by a solid belt to the back of his head by guys 20kg heavier than him.

Grant was actually slightly taller than Barks. Both were superb defenders played well out of their weight divisions, always picking up guys far bigger and stronger.

Just looking back, you have to wonder how different things might have been had we kept Perovic and Greene.

I think he played a few games at Essendon, as St Fid points out. I also believe he went on to play a handful of games for the Dogs, and 1 for Collingwood. This is purely from memory though, I will consult Heroes with Haloes when I get home!

Thankyou Dan Warna, he was an absolute gun, I loved him and have never forgiven Geelong for what they did to him and Burkey. I had the absolute pleasure of meeting him at Robert Harvey's testimonial, I was thrilled and of course he was lovely. A bit surprised he still had a fan out there.

I had number 6 on my jumper as well.
In 1991 every time we kicked in from full back we aimed for Granty. Behind Lockett and Loewe he was the best mark in the side. If he'd been 3 inches taller he would have made an awesome CHF.
