How to tackle Selwood

Post: # 829914Post Milan Faletic »

I have watched Joel Selwood all year and have noticed that he keeps his head and shoulders fairly upright but drops his knees so that the tackler gets him too high.

But then I saw that pic of him in the Herald Sun website and that pic spoke a thousand words. He was holding the ball high, up near his shoulders which means if you are trying to lock the ball in to him, you are risking a high tackle.

So what is the solution? Maybe tackle him lower and have someone ready to receive his disposal. Tackle him from the front to lock the ball in. Use the sling tackle to bring him to ground.

It's going to be an interesting challenge.

He's a tricky one that Selwood.

Perfect tackle would be to grab an arm, but you run the risk of missing and coathangering him.

Just like he did to Gilbee twice a couple of weeks ago.

Don't let him get the ball much?

The best way to tackle Selwood or any other player is to win the ball yourself and let them do the chasing.

Selwood is an expert at playing for free kicks this way.

AFL has always been a game about what you can get away with rather than just playing to the rules.

Our guys just need to stay focussed that Selwood does this, and is very good at it.

Head high contact is allowed in Grand Finals.

I hope that our players understand that.

Can't tackle him eh??? An old fashioned Stephen Powell shirt front would do the trick!

Lenny's shoulder to make contact with Selwood's pancreas is probably the best way.

Tackle 'em like there's no tomorrow Sainters!

drive into the tackle where possible and put him sideways. otherwise grab under the arms and in the same motion push your head resting under one arm, pushing it up, and swing him...hard! his hands will either be pushed apart or pushed across.
if you take his feet off the ground he no longer has the option to drop - you control and expect his fall.

Tackle him early and tackle him hard, if he wants to drop his head and leave the Cats one short for the best part of 4 quarters then it's on his head (so to speak).
