Parking near the G

Post: # 818178Post SaintDebi »

Despite having really accommodating bosses who are trying to cover part of my shift, it looks like its going to be difficult to leave work early on Friday night.
I probably won't be able to leave home (here in Geelong) til at least six. We usually just park at the G when we play there, but with our late start, peak hour traffic to navigate and a big crowd expected I'm not confident of getting a park. I don't know the area very well, and I have a hubby who has difficulty walking long distances or at a very fast pace.
I really don't want to miss this game. I wont get tickets to the GF so this will be it for me for the year.
But I also don't want to miss seeing the game because we're driving around looking for a park.
Any advice, or should I just resign myself to watching on telly, and at least seeing the whole game?
Obviously I need to make a decision by first thing Monday morning!

Debi...traffic and parking round the G on a big night is a bugger..tehres no easy way to say it. Even using the G car park can be very time consuming as the access roads are crowded. Count double if theres something on a Rod Laver and/or Hisense. There are spots to park but they are all a good walk from the ground.

My suggestion would be to use a car park at Southgate and tram it up Flinders St..or if you do end up with some time up your sleeve you can walk thru Fed Square and onto the footbridge to the ground

The Car park under Eureka Tower 6 bucks and its never been even close to full when Ive been there. From there its a 2-3 min walk up to the Flinder St tram stop. You also avoid the worst of the CBD traffic as you access it from City Rd (cnr Southgate Ave)

I wouldnt stress about a ticket. The tram will be crowded and by the time you make your token attempt at getting to the machine you'll be at the G (The stop outside the Hilton Hotel)

Hope this helps

You can park for free around the city end of Lygon St from 630pm and walk, it takes 20-30mins, good excercise.

Park in North Melbourne near the market for free, take a taxi across Victoria Parade and down Clarendon St. The taxi will cost about $10 or less each way. Probably cheaper and more predictable than parking closer to the ground.

Hi Debbie,
We too have had this problem coming from Geelong. last week was a real push as i worked nightshift Sat night and had to be at work in Geelong for another nightshift at 6.30pm.

3 hours sleep and not much patience for looking for parks.

We left Geelong at 12pm parked at Spencer St station and then bought a Met ticket at the 7/11 caught a tram direct to the MCG and made it on time.

After the game we caught the tram back to Flinders/Spencer St Xing and got back to Geelong by 6.30pm

The Met ticket was $9 for three of us.

When you have little time on your hands it's a risk to drive closer to the ground as it may take longer in the end.

The casino is usually o.k too. Then a 20-30 min walk along Southbank nd
the river to the G.

We should car pool some time.

Thanks everyone. There are a lot of helpful suggestions there. I'm not sure yet exactly what we'll do, but now that you've all pointed out so many options, I'm pretty sure we'll get there.
I also just remembered that the new ring road starts/finishes right near where I work in Waurn Ponds, so I think my husband (who starts holidays tomorrrow) will pick me up from work. I'll try to get away early but if I can't I'll let the boss know that I'm leaving on the dot of five, throw my Saints top on over my uniform then straight into the car and onto the ring road. I think its gonna work! YAY!

Thanks perfectionist. Had thought of the train, but a couple of problems.
One is I'd be pushing it to get from work to South Geelong and parked and on the train in time. Also, hubby had fairly major foot/anke surgery a few years ago. He's doing great now, but there's no way he'd get through the crowds at the G and back at Southern Cross in time (especially as I'm not leaving til we've all finished singing the song). Unfortunately a ten minute walk for you or I can be a half hour or more walk for him depending on if its a good or a bad day.
Last but not least, I don't know how I'd cope on public transport on the ride home if (God forbid!) we happen to l...., to lo..., to loo....
I can't bring myself to say it, but you get the picture!

ps) I appreciate your research in checking out timetables for me though. :)

I'll be driving in from our depot in Sunshine, may just park where I park for Etihad and grab the city circle tram to get there.
I hate Friday nights at the G because it is such a hassle to get there and park.

How often and how late does the city circle tram run?
It runs past the docklands side of etihad doesn't it? (the side where the cow is up the tree?). And where does it stop in relation to the G?
Sorry to sound like a country bumpkin(!) but I don't know Melbourne all that well, and we only ever drive there. (Have actually NEVER ridden on a Melbourne tram in my life!).
How embarrassing!

Over the Westgate, take the Montague St exit, turn left and go over the Yarra, stay in the right lane. Turn right at the lights just before Spencer St, this takes you towards the old World Trade Centre (old Crown Casino), go right at the roundabout and a bit further down on your right is a Wilson carpark (next door to the Victoria Police Centre). Parking will be $10 at that time.

Once out of the lifts, turn left and it takes you on to Flinders St, just up to your right will be a tram stop. Jump on either tram and one will either take you up to the Hilton or to Rod Laver Arena. These trams will get you alot closer than the City Circle tram which turns at Spring Street I think.

It's a great spot to park for Etihad games.

Debbie,
You won't have to walk far from Southern Cross Station. We did this last week and caught one 2 blocks down direct to the MCG.

Then on the way home we crossed the walkbridge at gate 6 over the rail
lines and onto one of the many, many trams waiting to go back to Spencer
st.

Not much walking at all and no need for the car.

Either that or park in one of those $10 parks in Flinders St and jump on a tram to the MCG. Lots of trams operating to the G at that time.

We did see the circle tram but I wouldn't bank on that.

I don't live in Victoria, Debi, and even I've done that!!

And, back to an earlier post, does anyone ever pay to ride the trams/trains or do they just hop on and hope for the best??

The Circle finishes at 9PM on Fridays and runs about every 15-20 minutes.
The closest it gets is Spring and Flinders Street.

Thanks again to everyone for all your helpful suggestions.
After being excited and primed to go right up to late last night, other outside factors have come into play which just complicated things further. As a result we've made the difficult decision to stay home and watch on TV.
The upside (glass half full, people) is that with the four of us not going, we are saving well over $500 - $600, so however we decide to watch / celebrate the Grand Final, we now have a much healthier budget to spend on it.
We are all disappointed, but I know that all of you who go will maintain the passion and the noise. Cheer even louder and barrack even harder on my behalf!
Hope you all get the seats you want and have a wonderful night!
I may not be there, but I will "be there"!

Debbie.

I know this thread seems finished, but I was hoping that you have not decided to stay home on the basis of being unable to get there on Friday night? I am in Geelong and will be leaving work around 6pm Friday night to go to the game - as I did two weeks ago, I will do my best to get a park the other side of the shrine and then walk across, but am exploring other options re parking as well.

I will have an empty car - if I can be of assistance for you I would be more then happy to transport a couple of crazy Saints fans!

If that helps at all, drop me a line and we can sort something out.

Please...let's win a Premiership before GEELONG!!!! (O.k., so we've missed that opportunity...maybe let's win the next one before Geelong????)
