Most frugal H&A season ever?

Post: # 808162Post Harvey To Hayes »

Sorry if this has already been discussed, but does the 1411 points that we conceded in the 22 matches of 2009 qualify our boys as the stingiest team in VFL/AFL history? I checked the stats back as far as the early 70s and we seem to have it cornered by a fair margin in that time period...

Amazing effort throughout the year...

Need to back it up when it counts though...

Love the idea of a frugal defense.

Graph our points for and points against, and draw a trend line on each.

Points for:

-1.03x + 111.75

Points against:

0.97x + 53.01

What does this mean? Well, according to the trend:

Round 1: 111 v 54
Round 11: 100 v 64
Round 22: 89 v 74
Grand Final: 85 v 78

We scrape through in the grand final! Statistically proven!

Of course, we have to get there first... There's a pretty high error on this prediction so it's quite possible that an individual game in the next few weeks could have scores on either side of the predicted numbers. Which could mean a bigger win! Or a loss.

Ah, 2am, what can't you do?

Ah, cheers for that. It's funny how the scoring flow of footy has changed over the years, in the early 80s for instance the team with the lowest score against was often still over 2000 points for the year, that's 100 goals more than we conceded. Then in the late 60s obviously it went through a tight period again. Shows that the game is constantly ebbing and flowing...
