Current players that will one day coach

Post: # 803560Post Beej »

Will be interesting to bump this thread in a few years.

In light of Hardwick and Scott's recent appointments, it seems as though clubs are looking for players who were equipped with both footy-smarts and hardness in their playing days.

Keep in mind that success as a player doesn't necessarily translate to coaching aspirations. Often those who weren't successful footballers decide to coach as a way of fulfilling that burning desire they had to achieve something in the game. However, those players are almost impossible to pick.

I'd be surprised if the following footballers didn't pursue coaching once their playing days were over. (those with asterisks will IMO definitely coach)

From St Kilda:
Luke Ball

Other clubs:
Simon Goodwin
Luke Power
Tarkyn Lockyer *
Mark McVeigh
Matthew Pavlich *
Paul Chapman *
Sam Mitchell *
Josh Carr
Chad Cornes *
Jude Bolton

Farkin Tarkyn as my brother calls him.

Hope he coaches Collingwood. He can teach them how to shirk it, hang back for cheap possessions , and generally whinge and moan.

Like Matthew Knights?

It's strange how perceptions can differ.

I see him as a very clever footballer who's definitely not one to shy away from the hard stuff. Also impresses me whenever he does media.

Just like Knights, yes!

Re Farkin Tarkyn - Must confess I fail to see any attractive feature about Black and White folk, but he along with that turnip Nick Maxwell really rub me up the wrong way. All prim and articulate and schooled and oh-so-earnest in front of the cameras but on the field they bleat like a couple of flockless sheep. It GRATES!!!!!!!!!!! Those two are two of my least favourite football people EVER behind Brett Heady, that muppet Glen Jackovich, Sam Mitchell, Matthew Lloyd, Brian Lake and - believe it or not - Brad 'Smiling Assassin' Johnson. Re the latter, go figure. I can't explain it myself.

Ah F*** it, I'm not huge on anyone who ain't a Saint.

Don't worry,

Can't stand Johnson either. And Lake is an overrated hack (as shown by Riewoldt a few weeks ago).

He's just got that about him doesn't he? Astute, tough, yet refined. Just an impressive human being. Who wouldn't want to play for him if he coached?

Re Sam Mitchell, he does seem a little jumped-up. He had some work done to his teeth not too long ago but it's as if they're now too big for his mouth. That's the impression I get when he speaks - like his teeth are in the way.

Players whom I think may one day coach (one from each team):

Jason Blake
Craig Bolton
Troy Chaplin
Josh Gibson
Stephen Gilham
Ryan Hargrave
Tom Harley
Adam Hunter
Luke McPharlin
Adam McPhee
Nick Maxwell
Chris Newman
Joel Patful
Ben Rutten
Bret Thornton
Paul Wheatley

And a list of players who will almost certainly never coach an AFL game as long as they live:

Gary Ablett
Peter Burgoyne
Brett Burton
Stuart Dew
Aaron Edwards
Brendan Fevola
Chad Fletcher
Barry Hall
Des Headland
Jordan McMahon
Steven Milne
Will Minson
Russell Robertson
Anthony Rocca
Justin Sherman

The coaching types at the saints at present IMO are

Ball,Hayes,Maguire,Maxi,Monty and Reiwoldt.

Burke,Andrew Thompson and Hamill from recent times.

Other players who will never coach:

Alan Didak - too much of a wanker
Heath Shaw - see Didak
Jimmy Bartel - too introverted (same goes with Banger)
Aaron Sandilands - too much of a ruckman
Chad Fletcher - pre-season training: Las Vegas
Matthew Richardson
Nathan Lovett-Murray - pre-season training: Amsterdam
Adam Cooney
Quentin Lynch
Ben Cousins - recovery session: Ibiza
Travis Cloke - you just know
Mark Williams
Nick Stevens
Paul Hasleby - too nice
Dale Thomas - you just know

Another player who may coach but not a current player:

Kane Johnson

I could easily be wrong but I get the impression that whilst he is a fantastic captain, that he's not all that switched on tactically.

Without doubt a great motivator though.

He could be a specialist yoga and meditation coach.

Interesting Thread....

We all know Simpson will be coaching soon enough..but another from the roos could be Petrie...Seems to have a very good football brain and understands the game as well as any imo.

I think he will be involved in some form of coaching. whether that be as a head coach or a line coach(Fwd) i dont know.

Liam Jurrah

I saw him signal to an oppostion player to mark it once instead of punch as no one was near him. Great teacher of the game

On a serious not
Brett Kirk
Tyson Edwards/scott Thompson
Leigh Montagna

However you might have to think outside the square, who would have ever though that Ross Lyon/ Grant Thomas would coach?

So i reckon Lewis Roberts Thomspson

Aaron's new swimming pool construction business was given a plug by Sam Newman on the Footy Show a couple of months ago.

Doesn't sound like he will be coaching anytime soon.
