So who will make All Australian?

Post: # 788136Post SainterK »

Sorry if this thread has already been done, I did try to find one. So who do you think will make the AA team this year from the Saints, and any surprises? I realise there are a few weeks to go, but thought we could have a go....

For mine

Definite
Roo, Hayes, Joey, BJ, Dal, Gilbert

Strong Chance, but some competition
Fisher, Milne, Gardiner (should he return this week)

I'd like to think Roo will be named Captain

I think Milne has been excellent this year but Lecras may have his spot wrapped up.

45 goals or around that mark in a god awful team including some standout performances.

We will definately have at least 5-6 players in there though

Agree with your definties but perhaps Dal will be the unlucky one. i would love to see Gilbert named.
Milne, no chance, he's never made it even with 50 and 60 goal hauls, much to my disappointment.
Gardiner a smokey but unlikely.
Lock them in: Roo, Hayes, Montagna.

Not unless he finishes with 4 blinders. J Brown is way ahead of him now.

HF: riewoldt _??_ _??_ chapman? pendlebury?

if kosi kicks a big bag against hawthorn he would be in contention one feels.

Kosi no chance, Gardiner very unlikely

Kosi's been way too up and down and would be behind Riewoldt, Brown, Fevola, Franklin, Tredrea and maybe even Roughead and Tippet. Gardiner would be behind Sandilands, Jolly, McIntosh, Clark and maybe Ryder.

Riewoldt, Hayes, Montagna, Goddard. Gilbert and Dal in that order should make the team.

Fisher should be in the squad but would be lucky to make the team, Milney an outside chance to crack the squad.

I also don't agree with Franklin, Tippett or Tredrea and I don't believe they'll want to name Rooey on the flank. Someone like Didak will most likely be named there. I seriously doubt they'll want to name 4 really big blokes on the forward line.

this is tredrea's testimonial year. no way in the world he has been anywhere near AA.
tippet has been hot and cold, dominated by the STK brickwall.
fevola and franklin unlucky in beaten teams.

Sadly, without my rose-coloured glasses on, I would think that only Riewoldt, Hayes and Goddard are certainties. Montagna will also be perilously close, but I can't see 3 of our midfielders getting AA selection, so I'm afraid he might miss out. Dal won't even be close, nor will Milne.

Given our defensive record, one of our defenders will possibly get in: Gilbert perhaps, or even Fisher again. And, depending on what happens in the next few weeks, Dawson might be a smoky (forgive the pun). I would love the headline: "From Reject to Rookie to AA in One Season."

So, for mine, it will be only Riewoldt, Hayes, Goddard and a defender (I'm not sure which one).

I'll try for Gilbert, Goddard, Hayes, Riewoldt and Montagna.

And then I'd get them to trade their awards in for Premiership Medallions!

I would be staggered if Gilbert doesn't get a spot. I would like to hear of two other HBF who have been better than him this year. He has taken his game to another level since the break, and played great against the cats, which was every players ultimate test. (so far)

Curious that the cats had b/w 7-9 players in the AA team for 2 years running, and that us ppl on this forum (and let's face it, you can't get any more biased than this group) can only fit 5 saints into an undefeated team. A team I might add which has a better percentage at this time of the year than the cats did at the same time last year.

I reckon certainties are Roo, Lenny, BJ, Gilbert, (and Dal on the bench)

I reckon they'll name Goddard as the other half back flanker.

Gardiner, if he can get himself back into the form he was in before injured may get a spot on the bench as the second ruckman.

You're probably right St Bev, I forgot about poor ole Joey

INterestingly Joey and Dal are in a lot of top 10's in many media awards, yet Lenny seems to be the one everyone expects to get a guernsey.

Also interstingly is that Ablett and Judd's form has dropped off in the past few weeks. I still think that Ablett is a cert, but even Gerard Healy was questioning Judd in the AA team last night with Sheehan.

I agree with your definites, except for Dal as I think it will be hard to get more than two mids in.

Gardy will have a show if he comes back and finishes the season off.

I also would like to see Roo named captain.

The big thing with the Saints this year is the fact we are playing as a team, especially the defense. Hence only one defender, Gilbert is a shoe in, and BJ.

Kevin Rudd has nominated himself as Captain and Julia Gillard as Vice-Captain.

Here's my team..

FB: Gilbert Lake Scarlett
HB: Hodge? Bock Goddard
C: Ablett Swan Montagna
HF: Brown Riewoldt Chapman
FF: LeCras Fevola Didak
Foll: Sandilands Selwood Judd
INT: Jolly Lovett Mitchell Pendelbury

Hodge is no certainty but his second half of the year has been right up there. I considered Drummond prior to injury and Gilbee isn't far off. Newman has been okay as well.
Lovett is my smokey as there's mids above him but his evasive run and creative play are ideal.
That last position on the bench is a real toughy and it goes to Pendelbury after dominating my dream team! Higgins would have had a place prior to injury and Dal is unlucky- he could probably steal Pendles/ Mitchell's position but i tried to tame the bias.

I'm too lazy to do my own, however I like 90% of your team, so I'll just put suggestions in 8-)

I would put Selwood in the centre and Hayes as Ruck rover. Pendlebury and Swan can fight out the spot on the bench  Maybe both of them can be on the bench and remove Lovett, who's been good but not AA in my opinion. Dal would be in the mix with the two pie boys on the bench.

I'd also have Brown at FF. Doesn't seem right to have the big Brown dog on a flank. I'd cut Fev from the team altogether. As a FF Brown's a better bet I reckon.

I wouldn't have Hodge in either, but off the top of my head, I can't think of a better flanker, poss Mackie from the cats.

Steve Johnson was a shoe in prior to injury wasn't he? Poss take Lecras' spot?

Yeah decent suggestions there Moods. I did actually remove Fev and put Brown at FF with Davis in the pocket.. i thought it was a bit too small but it would probably work fine. Yeah Stevie J is unlucky and Lovett wouldn't make any other AA side - just mine as i like his run.

don't get me wrong, I don't think any of them will make the final team. but if we're being objective, apart from Tippet (who Kosi is probably ahead of now I think about it), all those blokes have kicked more goals and got more touches etc. than Kosi.

Kosi's had his best year possibly ever but his great performances are still interspersed by games where he does nothing. Not AA material, but then neither are some of the other blokes I'd have ahead of Kosi. Roo CHF and Brown FF will probably be just about the extent of key forwards in the team this year.

fwiw my team
B: Gilbert Scarlett Prestigiacomo
HB: Enright Bock/Fisher Goddard
C: Montagna Swan Boyd
HF: Chapman Riewoldt O'Keefe
F: S Johnson Brown Davis
R: Sandilands Ablett Hayes
Int: McIntosh Dal Santo Judd Selwood

emergency: Bock/Fisher, Lake, Pendlebury, Jolly, LeCras

line ball between Bock and big Fish atm, hopefully Sammy picks up and makes the spot his own
